  1. Fingers crossed, I may not be grounded for the 4th after all, the wonderful people at Planeexhaust.net were able to fabricate a new riser in like an hour, should be here tomorrow.
  2. honestly, i'd wonder why it ended up at auction? auction aircraft scare me, is something really wrong with it ? gear up and prop strike is par for the course and old, no biggie. blowing up is a bit much. i cant' see any flight history, has it been flying ? if this was at my airport and my mechanic said the airframe was 100% i'd be interested, overhaul the engine, add couple avionics and you could still come out close to even.
  3. exhaust is pretty new, despite how the picture looks, the pipes are not corroded or worn. that's not really rust on the pipes. thinking maybe the crack had been there awhile and my last landing/planting was the last straw 8)
  4. you are correct, it's cylinder 1 in the diagram. thanks all
  5. anyone happen to know the part number. RH front, cylinder 2 - 1974 m20e io-360-a1a
  6. 100k hull @800 ish hours came to $2155 yesterday. getting painful
  7. The CDI is a KI-214 and it's probably unrepairable there are a couple of other ways to get an ils but eventually you'll give up and buy another radio/cdi. note, this is just for the ILS, i believe the radios work just fine for VOR/LOC with available cdis. you can buy kx170bs for a few hundred bucks, probably buy a dozen for the cost of garmins cheapest nav/com.
  8. My Birdy, except for a different panel layout and transponder, was equipped the same. she's since been upgraded with a gns480, 2xG5 and pma8000g audio panel. do it all over again i'd go gnx375 and g5's and be satisfied with localizer approaches. Truth is, the few time's i've needed precision like capability, the runways didn't have ILS. problem i found was with the radios, the mx/kx170bs don't directly support ILS and the necc component the king ki-214 is almost unobtainable meaning if you want ILS and LPV you might as well go full on gps/nav/comm.
  9. well if you follow the general instructions of leaning to rough then a turn or two, you are probably lean of peak
  10. I"m happy g100ul is available but terrified they will remain the only option if the other fuels fail to gain certification, with an almost mandated, unassailable monopoly, i'd expect private equity firms to buy gami and completely shaft us.
  11. pfft no one dead, bird not badly beat up, could be worse.
  12. I tend to expense what it'd cost for an airline ticket, seems fair.
  13. I have 2xg5's, handheld radio and multiple gizmos. adding a second battery but that is mainly for the second surefly
  14. have to admit, i only change the oil every 40 to 50 hours 8) I do worry about putting less than 10 hours a month on her, it's like every weekend but still its not all that much. barely made 100hours last year
  15. This is the way, I haven't let my logbooks out of my control in 5 years. Actually have a sticky application protocol, i carefully wash my hands, cut open the vacuum bags holding the logs, apply stickies to proper page, put logs in new vacuum back and reseal, pat logbooks then put them back in their logbook cubby I actually keep get 2 copies of the stickies, i apply one as above and the other in the airplane log in the plane.
  16. just a thought, could you just not use 100% power instead of changing timings ?
  17. yeah, i don't truss your description, send a pic
  18. I did the same, you have to order the audio harness premade or get it from an authorized dealer to get the warranty
  19. airnav fuel routing is great, can really save you some money. try to pick fields of good size and capability, nice to be able to get a crew car, take a nap, maintenance, etc... try to pick a time when the winds are favorable, west to east you have a good shot but your return will be SLOW. make sure you have some supplies, extra oil, tools, snacks, drinks etc... pick a day where you can avoid crossing fronts and you should be good. oh yeah, pit stop somewhere and try to get to florida early am, otherwise you'll have to dodge buildups/thunderstorms. stop in wichita, touch and go the shuttle landing strip, fly past the cape, all kinda cool stuff on the way
  20. honestly, you wouldn't believe how sensitive those things are, mine in the tail can detect a person walking by the plane within about 3 feet. while all testing was well within range, it was very noticeable when i tested standing near the tail and when i was out by the wing
  21. Brittain magnetometer
  22. mine is just a stiff piece of aluminum in the tail, not much to fabricate. your IA/AP could make short work of it
  23. I assist when possible, Find a friendly AP/IA, wiring/connecting avionics is pretty simple. i defer fabricating to the professionals, i'm terrified of drilling/cutting/bending ANYTHING in birdy.
  24. what cruise and how long was it, really want to do this
