  1. This is a great conversation for everyone headed to OSH this coming week. I have weights for my wife, daughter and myself. Don't tell the girls but I added 5lbs to all of our weights just to account for daily weight fluctuations. I also have a luggage scale and have weights for everything going in the plane. We will be shipping 50lbs of stuff to OSH. It all would have fit, although not comfortably for the rear seat passenger. But I wanted to carry 50 gal of fuel. I could have gone down to 40 gals, but that would have added an extra fuel stop to the trip in order to carry legal reserves. My home field is 3900 MSL with an 11,000 MSL MEA for eastbound IFR flights. Luckily, I have a 9000' runway.
  2. Had a GPS fail to initialize in the Beech 400 while x-country with two student pilots. The MEL said we could press on using land based NAVAIDs, but had to remember to change the designation on the flight plan as we were no longer /G. I loved it, as that was how I learned to fly IFR, my students HATED it.
  3. Did your post get lost? What does this have to do with the ARI cowl mod being discussed? Also...I assume you mean "their" not "there."
  4. I was excited to see an actual fly-in, but of course I work this weekend. Maybe I can convince the company we need to fly the PC-12 in for some advertising.
  5. Ha, I know a guy that may have landed a few different aircraft with the yaw damper engaged. Seems to be a non-event in most cases. Just don't try to do a 180 on a narrow runway with it engaged. Actually it doesn't work very well even on 150' wide ones. In the PC-12 I use the 500' call-out to ensure the A/P & Yaw damper are disengaged. My Mooneys GPS also calls out 500' so it is repeatable. This assumes clear of clouds at 500'. Otherwise, I wait until the runway is insight and landing is assured before mashing the disconnect button.
  6. I can see the price being a concern. Unless the owner gives you pause, I wouldn't discount an airplane because its owner is an A&P, as long as they are willing to let a reputable shop due a pre-buy.
  7. Get the plane to @AGL Aviation at KMRN, Morganton, NC for the pre-buy. They are probably the closest Mooney Service Center and have a very solid reputation within the community.
  8. That is incorrect. Garmin owns a J. It was used to certify the Js. My M20F was used to certify the Fs and Gs Another MS aircraft was used for the Es and an additional E was used for the 62-64 year models. Garmin uses loaned aircraft to certify their APs. They have multiple hangars full of aircraft undergoing certification.
  9. Gens can be used and probably worth it if you have the weight available. There are charging stations, however the daisy chained power cords is a little concerning, and you have to trust everyone there or come up with a locking cage to charge your phone in. Bring a small fuel can, there is a gas station just out the gate of the N40. That would be a good time to use a bike. Otherwise, I have not found a need for a bike.
  10. 2000-2020 - United States Air Force Flew: T-6AII, TC-12(BE-200), C-130E, C-130H3, MQ-1A, MQ-9A, U-28A(PC-12/45), T-1A(BE-400) Current - Life Flight Network (Part 135) PC-12NG/47E (Single Pilot)
  11. Then I guess I don't understand how you land with different flap settings at the same speed. Since the aircraft stalls at different speeds based on flap setting you should fly faster 0 flap vs. full flap. In doing so you will touch down faster with 0 flaps. This is true for every aircraft, not just Mooneys.
  12. I have landed every airplane I have ever flown in every flap setting available. You wouldn't want your first time landing 0 flap be during a flap malfunction. The M20F is pretty docile to land in any flap position if you are on speed. You may touch down faster but there is no reason to touch down farther down the runway then usual. You just have to adjust your aim point to account for the additional speed and distance traveled during the round out and flare.
  13. I work 7 days on 7 off. I start this Friday. If everyone gets together I will try to swing it. @john buhrmanif your transition training takes you to KBTM hit me up, there is a good chance I will be hanging out there now that the weather is improving. I work on the North end, Life Flight Network hangar.
  14. What days are you planning on being at Seeley?
  15. @gsxrpilotpilot owns the MS member map. He will send you the link once he has specific information from you.
  16. @john buhrmanI just moved my F from Helena to Butte. Once your complete with transition training we'll need to meet up..
  17. From the EAA website: Campsites Only one tent per plane unless a second tent is needed for immediate family members. If additional tents are needed, they must fit within the footprint of the aircraft.
  18. Yep, that is where Mooney was 2017, 18 & 19.
  19. @mike_elliottseems to be pretty close to Mooney. Mike, do you have any insight?
  20. Currently, I use Philips 20W-50 w/ Camguard. Before I moved back to Montana and lived in the southeast where it never got really cold, I ran Aeroshell W100 plus.
  21. I'm in the both category. JPI is in F and G5s shows C.
  22. Too bad COVID restrictions weren't still in place on the beaches of Florida. I'm sure the pilot would have preferred to land on the beach vs. Ditching in the Salt water, but too many human obstacles to avoid. The pilot did a great job of ditching the plane near the shore. Will be interesting to learn the nature of the "mechanical" problem he encountered, since it sounded like the engine was running as it flew past the camera.
  23. Absolutely! In fact I fly a PC-12, single pilot on a Part 135 Certificate. One of the Companies OpSpecs from the FAA is that the autopilot is the "second" pilot. We can't dispatch without it. In my Mooney, I love having reliable glass instruments, a WAAS GPS and the latest and greatest autopilot. No worries about a vac pump failure in IMC (once was enough), my ADI never suffers from an inability to become erect, and it's hard to argue against the usefulness of an autopilot while in IMC. Training is the biggest investment that needs to happen after the upgrade is complete. All the coolest toys can become a huge distraction in you don't know how to use them accurately and efficiently.
  24. Which GPS Navigator are you using?
  25. What GPS are you using? I jumped on the GTN simulator app and it loads the TORO7 with the transition grayed out and says "None available" once loaded its way points are runway heading 098 to 660' then HDG 060.
