  1. I have found that my JPI shows consistently about .1-.2 volts less than actual. I figured it was because of some kind of hard wiring on the circuit board that takes a voltage reading after the unit draws power instead of before. This might be a false understanding of how electronics work, but I have a cigarette adapter that has a voltage reading that is the same as what my voltmeter tells me. However, the larger difference you are explaining seems like something may be wrong with your JPI ...
  2. My #1 nav with GS is rock solid, just need to clean contacts on the display. My #2 nav is a little shaky and I am pretty sure it is due to less than adequate shielding on the VOR/LOC wire going to the cdi.
  3. I tried using just foam ear plugs under passive David Clarks and it really made me nervous. It blocks all high and most midrange. But all the low range continues and you hear things in the motor/prop that you wouldn't otherwise hear. It was so crazy sounding, I pulled them off right after takeoff to make sure my motor was running correctly on climb. Some people get used to them, but I haven't tried them again since.
  4. Thank you for your advice. I had considered a 430 because an ifd440 slide in later would be easy, but I think you're right. If you're gonna do it, just do it right from the start. I think, at this point, I should stay the course. Finish AP install, get tank sealed, get rating and then see exactly how much instrument flying I end up doing. Then, I might be able to justify it.
  5. I'll send you a pm
  6. Sorry. Auto correct. I meant to type dynon d2
  7. Anyone have experience with the demon d2?
  8. Thank you all for the very wise advice. I do have an iPad mini on the yoke and a stratux. I also have a garmin aera510, so xm is also possible. Someone mentioned an engine monitor.. Actually, that was the first equipment I added to this plane when I bought it. Jpi830 with all the extras. I have the accuflite and alt hold ready to install. (The switches will go at the top of the panel under the tape in the photo) As I mentioned earlier, I got a ki-208 to replace my old #2 cdi. It is in now. I've attached a photo of the panel as it is now. I have no intention of EVER flying hard ifr. I simply just want to get in and out when there are vfr ceilings of about 3000' min. I was thinking about getting an Apollo gx60, or gnc300xl if I can find a super deal on either one. I know someone that got a gx60 for $900 with annunciator, antenna, and rack. If anyone has some of this stuff on the shelf, let me know. Waas is just not in the cards for me, as I need to seal a tank and pay for instrument lessons.
  9. what model indicator do you have and how old is it?... I just replaced one of mine that was super old showing about 10 degrees off VOT... It was an old KI-201, which I understood is really difficult to repair.. apparently, there is a graphite disc inside that is very brittle... I found a lightly used KI-208 for $230 with the plug... if you have an older cdi, you may want to bench test the KX170.. If it checks out, then just go get a 208 rather than bother repairing an older indicator.
  10. I got a KI-208 with the plug.. I noticed that the previous owner didn't wire up the internal lighting, as the pin is missing from the relevant plug slot.. Does anyone know where I can get some of the female pins used for the KI-208/209 plugs without having to buy the entire plug?
  11. I wonder if there was anyone with any political significance aboard??
  12. I think I know what the announcement is... well.. it seems less than major... Basically, they are starting a used mooney brokerage... a friend of mine lives in Kerrville and said he saw a big article in the news paper that was basically a big puff piece talking about how Mooney will sell used planes now as "mooney certified used" using a 27point inspection system and offering a 30 day warranty. Sounds like a fancy way of saying they are struggling to make money selling new aircraft, so they have to go into used brokerage. Meanwhile, cirrus is expanding rapidly... I think they are eating up market share.. Cirrus is building a big new facility here at KTYS and hiring like crazy in Duluth..
  13. Wow, I didn't realize the new garmin units' data was so expensive!
  14. I will investigate with my a&p. Thank you
  15. yes, I just have a few switches right now. I'm currently investigating if the guys at PS engineering might work out a good deal on a prefabricated harness and a used 6000b. Based on some of the chart data discontinuance things I've just read, I think if I ever can afford ifr GPS, I would want it to be an Avidyne ifd440 (just about the only think that would make a 430 install a thought) or possibly BK if they come around by then. In my opinion, garmin, as a company just rapes its own customers.
  16. That really blows. I'm so afraid to buy a garmin GPS
  17. I had looked at the kln94, but I had considered it no more capable that a gnc300xl, and doesn't have comm integrated. You're right about waas source being integrated on many adsb boxes. I don't need waas approaches either. Are the map updates similar cost for King and garmin ifr units?
  18. I wish I had researched mags more before installing newly rebuilt slicks. I had a little over 600hours on the previous set which were running perfectly fine. I have about 10hours on these rebuilt slicks and have been worrying about them. I've been having difficulty with fouling plugs since the install. Do mags either fire or not fire? Or can they produce weak spark on one or more plugs individually? It's always my #1 lower plugs that is giving me trouble.... But, haven't run the engine very hard. Mostly local loitering, low power LOP
  19. oh good. Can the faceplate be removed without pulling the radio out?
  20. That's right. And today, my kx 155 nav display lost the first three digits of the selecting frequency flip flop. I already found a good ki208 for my kx170b. ;)
  21. Mike, jpi sells collar proves that fit on the tanis probes and factory cht probe. Same way as the spark plug probes, but smaller diameter collars. It is what they shipped me with my 830, as I also have tanis probes. I have read that they will indicate lower temperatures than bayonet cht probes and much lower than spark plug collar probes.
  22. I have the iPad mini 2 with stratux. The only thing I can really see missing from fltplan go is ahrs. They made big improvements to weather recently. Now, I create and file plans in the app and I can also print via wifi to my printer, as I prefer to have paper backup in the cabin. However, the iPad mini has yet to fail me.... However, i incorporated a heat sink in cradle that mounts to the yoke. If fltplan.com adds ahrs to go!, then I don't know how the pay apps will survive.
  23. I had already checked for that with the hope it would be the sender seal. It's coming from the aft top seam and had previously been externally patched. Fuel smell is only noticeable when opening baggage door after the cabin has been closed for 2 or 3 days with full tanks. If below the tab, there is much less smell.
  24. Thanks for the advice. I have an ipad and stratux... I think some people are working on getting AHRS working on it eventually... Regarding the gami analysis, this is typically what happens. Usually, 0.8 with the rear two cyclinders peaking at the same time well ahead of the front two peaking at the same time. Sometimes, more, sometimes less spread... but always 3&4 together and 1&2 together..
