Well, I put all my government covid payments into a separate account which pays for my engine overhaul. So, really my engine cost is zero to me. Maybe the right buyer for an $80k C has to think that way. Prices go up when money is free.

how many outputs do these super charger stations have? How many aircraft can be supercharged in an hour? Can linemen do it without you after you arrive? Do the batteries have to cool before recharging?

The barrel crack was found visually after honing. He confirmed all cylinders, including the new one were carefully inspected with dye penetrant though. the only think I can think of causing the cylinder crack is shock cooling. I did do some training on this engine years ago. No telling how long these cracks have been there.

He said the rod was rejected from a third party inspection, I understand it was magnafluxed.. the shop that did the crank also did the rods.. he said he tried to look at the crack using a 10x scope, but couldn’t see it. The barrel crack they were able to see after honing. It wasn’t visible after disassembly.

Here are pictures of the cracks. the rod crack is lengthwise. The cylinder crack is pretty high up in the stroke, which he said is strange. He had only seen the crack lower near the flange and had never seen a cracked barrel on an angle valve head.

I spoke with the shop today because I wanted more details on the cracked cylinder…. Specifically wanted to verify that the cylinders were magnafluxed. He confirmed all had been dye penetrant inspected. He was able to get a new cylinder off the shelf from an industry friend for $700. I was happy to hear that. He also told me that one of my connecting rods was cracked. Holy chit! In any case, things are put together and he’s getting close to running it on the test stand.

That sounds silly. the only time I push in mixture is to keep from getting too deep LOP on descent. -
that sounds horrible. did it do it just with both engines running coming into phase? was there any shaking when the engines were run independently? maybe it was some weird harmonic? I've heard that the gel packs mainly just help with the torque wobble during shut down....

not really, you gotta figure out who they are on the ground... for example, if you take a left brain learner straight to the plane without step by step detailed review and reading before flying, you've wasted their flight time. Opposite, if you go through all of the detailed step by step review and reading before flying with a right brainer, then you've wasted some of their ground time. This doesn't mean you refrain from chatting a few bullet points... It's just that left brain learns best from words, facts, sequencing and the right brain learns better on the fly non-verbal, visualizing, feeling cues.. (art).. it's a completely different approach and easy to figure out with a simple question to the student. I gave primary instruction to a father and daughter once. The father was right brain and the daughter was left brain. it's two completely different approaches. If you teach them the same way, one student will advance and the other will not progress.

Towered fields = longer time on ground and longer time in pattern = more time for each TOLD. In my experience it nearly doubles the student’s hours for the same amount of progress. Add the tower communications/solo block after short solo CC, and they usually breeze through it easily because they aren’t trying to learn all the other stuff also at the same time. you mentioned “same instructor, same methods”. That’s what I mean…. Not all students learn efficiently by the same methods. There are multiple learning styles that need different methods of instructing. examples: Right Brain/Left Brain Reflective/Impulsive Holistic/Serialist Dependent/Independent Auditory/Visual/Kinesthetic Superlinks Index of Learning Styles @carusoam points out a huge factor that I forgot to mention. And it relates to maintenance and flying schedule to drive concepts of recency, intensity, and exercise. Also, need to schedule 2-3 lessons per week only about an hour flight time each. Most students don’t have capacity to learn very much beyond about 45-60 minutes flying until later. Short repetitions is better for retention than trying to cram and overload.

Yes, but solo a trainer first, then switch to the mooney. However, you shouldn’t do this with just any cfi. You need a mooney CFI. Insurance will cost you, but you can get your ppl check ride in roughly the same total time because you should already have the basics if you’ve been turned loose for first solo. Your transition time and complex endorsement will be captured in the required ppl time, so that is saving down the road. there is a certain amount of learning primacy that will come with doing your initial ppl training in a mooney that should translate to lower risk of gear up landing and a few other things. if a CFI can’t get you to check ride in less than 60 hours, then they probably haven’t figured out your most effective method of learning very well and didn’t properly motivate and leverage those traits. (Assuming training is being conducted from an un-towered field, and no maintenance issues to interrupt training, issuing mid or short body models)

I’ve heard it go both ways. I’ve also heard of gel packs in the Lords rupturing after 6 months. We’ll see how it all works out soon, as the engine is starting to come together. Hurray!

Looks like the crank was finished this past week, as I just received these photos from the shop. Coming together now. it’s strange to see my engine so clean and shiny. it wouldn’t be a proper aviation shop without a dog running around.

The reason why it is taught to leave gear down until clear of the obstacle is because some planes have gear doors that open up and create drag in order to stow the gear before closing back up. I don’t know of any complex singles that have that kind of gear door… it’s just larger jets I know of like that. In any case, the DPE’s I’ve talked to say that is the FAA thinks that is the right way to teach due to learning primacy. They also acknowledge that not all planes can get the best performance like that. I teach that gear comes up when no more usable runway or clear obstacle. In my personal plane with manual gear, it comes up as soon as possible, because I can put it back down in about 1 second and I want to be clean. I leave flaps at TO until Vy. With electric gear, it is wait to use up runway. -
start opening the oil filler cap to let the steam out after shutting down from now on and you won't get much if any water in your oil

i have a well sorted 67F that is about to receive a fresh engine.. clean panel with jpi830, gtn650, G5s, interfaced Aera660, kx155/ki209, trig adsb transponder, autopilot, top prop, 201 windshield, a few speed mods, good paint, nice leather yokes and interior.. i had it insured for 80k, but i'm bumping it to 120k.. If it were to get totaled, I wouldn't be able to find another F, so this means going to a J or a twinCo.

I've received a letter from a local guy who scoped my plane and wanted to buy a share... I called with intent to help him find another mooney, but he had no money and was too old and out of currency to ever get insurance... As far as the scams, I think a lot of the phishing that comes by txt are actually just trying to connect active phone numbers with real property, that are then sold as sales leads or something.... About every week, I get something asking to buy my house at "xxxx road" address. -
My left wing tip had damage like that years before my ownership. Previous owner riveted a patch. Mine is a little farther out though. Same paint colors/scheme as yours too. If I ever paint my plane, will put some microballons to hide it better. Most planes have a little rash over the years. heck, when I went to buy my F, the owner was PIC and knocked the side mirror off his suv with the right wing tip taxiing back to his hangar. We laughed and said, better the car took the damage rather than the plane.

Well, today I got some good news and some bad news. Good news, the case is done. No cracks or anything. It is back in the shop’s hands now. Still waiting on crank and other steel parts. bad news, he said one of my cylinders was rejected due to a crack in the barrel. I was a little surprised because I understood the cylinder work had already been performed. I’ve never heard of a cracked barrel before. I wonder how a steel barrel cracks. I asked which cylinder, but haven’t heard back yet.

I don’t intentionally leave bait for critters that could draw them in from far away. I would rather them stay far away to begin with. About once a month, I spray peppermint oil around the hangar. Note, peppermint oil is corrosive to aluminum, so don’t spray it in your wings. Instead, spray acf50.
