Yea, Garmin must have a team of talented statisticians to develop some pretty complex price elasticity of demand formulas that don't leave a penny on the table.

Aera 660 ahrs and fis-b data input question
Browncbr1 replied to Browncbr1's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
The 660 requires a different bare wire kit than the 500 series. They made the relief in the clip geometry and also moved wiring pins around. The good thing though is that the 660 bate wire kit has two sets of rd-232 input and output wires. There is no photocell on the 660, but it will remember dim settings for the relevant time of day and will adjust with gps location (time zones / sunrise sunset). -
I’m at TYS (100 east), but go to Nashville area fairly often. Will be there next week

Aera 660 ahrs and fis-b data input question
Browncbr1 replied to Browncbr1's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
Thanks for the ideas. I’ll see if they will discount something as suggested. I’m kind of thinking about a gdl39 3D because of the battery and it will feed adsb data to the 660 as well. I have a stratum, but sick of rats nest of wires and reliability concerns of stratus and my iPad. Legality aside, is it possible to make the connection to the gtn to get traffic and weather from the gdl39? The connection to the 660 is sufficient, but just wondering. -
When you get it off the ground, go buy a box of wax paper and run the roll down the length of the door and wrap the width of the wax paper around the rubber seal and just use a little masking tape to hold in place so it goes up with the door rather than staying on the ground. Might work at least once.

S-TEC Looking for 15 Mooney owners
Browncbr1 replied to Barry LeBlanc's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
The roughly triple cost of competitor products that do the same things is a complete non starter.. not sure what stec’s product manager is thinking... not to mention the policy that renders almost no residual value if the owner ends up wanting to sell the system later on.- 52 replies

QAA and Kelley should be banned from selling their crap. I send mags to Select Aircraft in Texas. They are great!

I wouldn’t mind having access to a slow cheap as heck plane to build time at a very low cost. Just spend all day flying around chasing birds. Try to land at every field in the state in a day or something in a mite sounds fun.

I had a messed up dream last night. I dreamed that the IA came to me during annual and told me that they have to overhaul my engine because they found metal. I argued that I just recently cut open a filter and found nothing, so I want to see what they found. So I watched them put a borescope up through some scat tube and found metal shavings at a junction in the fresh air vent where someone hadn’t cleaned up some trimming at some point. I jumped up and argued are you serious you want to overhaul this engine because you found metal shavings that aren’t coming from inside the engine? They just shrugged their shoulders, then I woke up to my daughter asking if she can watch America’s funniest videos at 6am. What the heck?

Aera 660 ahrs and fis-b data input question

That’s how I have it wired up currently. I’m happy with the interface with the gtn650 and audio panel. -
Thought experiment... what’s the step up model?
Browncbr1 replied to bradp's topic in General Mooney Talk
If looking at operation cost, the only thing bigger I would get would be an A36. If looking at acquisition cost, B55 possibly 58. Keep you 90% mission in check. Fly with tanks to the tabs or half tanks for a few years until they move out. Making a stop for fuel is a hell of a lot cheaper than buying a bigger more expensive plane that burns way more fuel anyway. Is getting out and stretching legs a few times per year a good price to pay for saving a hundred grand? -
Aera 660 ahrs and fis-b data input question
Browncbr1 replied to Browncbr1's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
Yea, it was a miscommunication indeed. I decided to keep it anyway. The screen is very nice and I’ll probably eventually put in a gtx345r, but that won’t be for another year or two. Just wondering if there are any options for displaying data in the meantime. I thought about selling my Dynon D2 and use the money to get a gdl39 3D, but figured that would be money thrown away after a year or so if I put in a 345r. I already have dual G5s, so I think the d2 is not needed if I can get synthetic vision on the 660 -

I emailed garmin to confirm that adahrs data could be sent from a G5 via rs-232 in order to get synthetic vision on the Aera 660. Garmin confirmed in the response email.. so I bought the 660 and tried to get them talking (unsuccessfully). So I emailed them again asking more detail of exactly what connections and settings l, as I’m using the new mapmx protocol. Now, they say that the 660 will not display adahrs data coming from a G5. Obviously, this change in advice frustrated me and they tried to turn it around on me.. after some choice back and forth, they offered to give me a free database update in addition to the one that comes with the unit. Whatevs... so, my question to the folks using the 660 is about getting data to it. Are the gdl39 3D and gtx345 really the only two pieces of hardware that will give ahrs and Adsb data to the 660? I get it that they made the language proprietary (connext), but are there any other options?

I’ve been through all this before I decided on G5s. Software 2.3 is required for LPV approaches (glideslope). 2.1 allows only localizer performance gps approaches. Firmware upgrade is prohibitively expensive around $2k. And they will want to do the LED upgrade too.
-
2.3 gives glide slope for gps precision approaches.

Look for your alternator field wire going to your breaker. Make sure your audio lines are tied away from it. If you have a portable hardwired into your audio panel, also make sure those lines are away from the field wire. -
Most unbelievable service at TN FBO
Browncbr1 replied to Yooper Rocketman's topic in Miscellaneous Aviation Talk
Yea, they are awesome. I fly over there all the time to shoot approaches and buy fuel. If you stop in around lunch time, there is usually spaghetti or something they want to offer up for free in exchange for good conversation and getting to know you. Good folks. We jumped over there for the eclipse too. They arranged a bluegrass gospel string band to play in the hangar. Good folks. -

I'll go ahead and settle this now... both of yours are in the shadow of my monster hog. -
Jose, I’ve seen you post many times about how great your relief tube is. It must do one hell of a job sucking. I just use a half gallon milk jug, but maybe I’m cheating myself out of something better.

On the gtn, you can create a waypoint by entering VOR radial and DME. Then, you can set the gtn to hold at that waypoint. I don’t think you can make the magenta line curve along a user defined DME arc. I know it will do it if it is a published procedure though.
