  1. @201Steve it is pretty chicken shit of him not finishing up prior commitments. @MikeOH as far as minor warranty claims its generally easier just to eat them than go to the BS of getting them done under warranty. Field overhauls wouldn't bother me IF I knew the person and knew they had great attention to detail and was meticulous about their work
  2. They're about like any other engine except you would probably kiss a warranty good bye and it would be a field overhaul
  3. Growing up less than a mile from the CAF headquarters in Harlingen airplanes were always flying around, that and being in the country crop dusters were all over the place too. My dad and his brother both trained in WW II but the war ended and my dad moved back to Texas, my uncle stayed in the Georgia area and stayed active flying, he would fly home to Texas every couple of years. On one of his trips I flew with him to San Antonio to pick up my sister in his Mooney. At 16 I worked 1/2 day at a local Motorcycle Shop and part-time for the Cessna Dealership, I would take my paycheck from the Cessna job and sign it over to the Piper Dealership on the other end of the field, the Tomahawk had just came out and I liked it better than the 150’s. 45 years later here I am at 3:15am still talking about airplanes, listening to it rain and wondering if I’ll be able to fly in the morning, either way I’m heading to the hangar so off to bed for me
  4. Seeing how you ran the engine (fuel flow) I would flush everything down stream of the electrical pump
  5. Exactly, it’s always nice when the IA asked “ what was wrong with it?” rather than “What the hell were you thinking?”
  6. Sometimes the box is too big for some to think out of.... and that includes the FAA
  7. Last one I built was KZ1000 with a Vance & Hines BigBlock (1400cc) and a stock head angle milled 0.080” no turbo or juice, uncorked it would run low 8:40’s but we chipped it to mid 8:90’s...
  8. Bump the compression to over 15:1 and take it out 1400cc’s and you will....
  9. @RJBrown With the low compression ratios on aircraft engines I doubt it, we used Time-Serts on our Drag Bike motors to keep the cylinders and head in place.
  10. Heli-Coils (spring type) do not back out unless something is damaged. Thread inserts can be installed without the corresponding installation tool but I don’t recommend it unless you’ve done a bunch of them. The “tang” at the start of the insert compresses the helix for installation as is designed to be broke off in one direction, breaking the tang off incorrectly will damage the bottom thread. I’ve installed hundreds of both Heli-Coil and Timeserts over the years and a few Sav-A-Thread insert which I’m not a big fan of (the DO back out) side note or more of a question....... Why are all spark plugs metric threads?
  11. Just a quick look, KSJT > KGPM looks to be more like 60° with no wind correction. What were the winds aloft and what does your compass correction card say for 60° heading?
  12. TCDS for the IO-360 shows the following Sump capacity, qt. 8 Usable oil qt, 6 so does this mean you can run it as low as 2 qts? I keep mine at 7qts and wipe the belly
  13. Too busy with all that fly’s stuff...lol
  14. @M20Doc any new eye candy on the build?
  15. I pull the front seats, rear seat bottom and the side panels, some times I pull the carpet for cleaning but usually just leave it in, there are no inspection covers in the floor, but there are under the rear seat bottom
  16. the mechanic is the one signing it off, so seats and side panels or does he want more?
  17. On longer flights my Bose A20’s are my headset of choice, otherwise I have my old faithful passive set that I’ve had for years which I believe they are Rugged brand and have lived up to their name
  18. Guess someone thought it would be TWICE the protection.........
  19. Our airport manager did the same thing over a year ago, if SLC is a federally funded airport (which I’m sure it is) they (the airport) can not require it to be in annual or airworthy. Ask them to show you in the FAR’s where it’s required. Look up the Airport Compliance Manual on the FAA’s website, you can easily find several infractions on their part with in a few hours of research....
  20. Wasn’t there a thread a while back where they installed brakes on the RH side?
  21. Not sure I would have continued attempting to reset a circuit breaker, no since in potentially causing an electrical fire.
  22. While not original, logs can be recreated by an IA. Is there ANY paper work for the last 20 years? Sounds like you know who the previous owner(s) were, see if the can give you any names on who has worked on the plane and check with them to see if they have any copies of work done
  23. Just curious, what are they saying happened to the logs?
  24. Like above No logs at all = huge reduction in value old logs missing, but 10+ years of current logs = gives you some negotiation power current logs missing, but has older logs = not much better than no logs at all. Definitely check to make sure the logs aren’t being held by an A&P and there isn’t a mechanics lien against it
  25. Congrats, and remember if things get skinny and your back on Beans and Rice you can change it up with Rice and Beans..
