Oil/Filter Change Newbie Questions
RLCarter replied to SnowJustice's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
Being new to changing the oil & filter I would suggest get someone who is familiar with the task to watch over you. Not taking anything away from your mechanical ability but I have seen safety wire that wouldn’t stop rotation and even in the wrong direction -
Screws Inner Flap Mounting Bracket
RLCarter replied to InJuRo's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
So let me get this right, during the preflight you noticed A-symmetrical flaps but after you flew and deployed the flaps for landing they were fine…. Is that correct? -
Gotta ask…. What’s a hamburger button? …. lol

Go to a sign shop and have the cut out of vinyl, hangar neighbor does it all the time to get into Mexico (larger N# is required)

Like others have said, it’s a good idea to verify fuel flow from each tank while on the ground and allow ample time running on the tank your going to takeoff on before attempting to get airborne

Still looking…. If memory serves its in an odd place in the manual -
External Power for an E model
RLCarter replied to 65MooneyPilot's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
My E came with it, it’s in the IPC -
Heat not that hot. Later E model.
RLCarter replied to BloodRedSkies's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
This was on a 65 “E”, it was a small 1-1/2”(ish) hose that ran from under the panel on the pilot side down the left side and exited just above the floor in the rear. I’ll see if I have a picture of when I gutted the interior, I remember it was a pain snaking the new hose due to all the structural tubing -
Retrofitting 1962 M20C shock discs! SB M20-139A
RLCarter replied to Sdavis's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
When I purchased my E it had the old style disks, I contacted LASAR and ordered everything from them, about a 3rd the cost over going Mooney. Not sure on yours, but I’m pretty sure your existing trusses can be reused, I’ll look for the invoice, but it was basically new shock towers, new disks, I replaced all the hardware and bushings while it was off as well… spend the effort and repaint the gear while it’s apart, it’s well worth it -

Check all the scat/sceet hoses (ducts)mine was original and not in the best of shape , the rear seat hose runs behind the LH side panel and gets crushed shut over time. Full disclosure I never run cabin heat here in S. Texas but I did replaced all the hoses due to their condition -
Remove it as you would as if it was being replaced, ripping, cutting or any other means of removal other than the correct way is just a little crude. Spend the extra time and you’ll thank yourself down the road by not having a bunch of orphaned hardware/parts…. Just my $0.02.. oh wait it’s aviation, make that $0.27….

I wrote my own for my iPad, didn’t really like it once I stated using it…. Went back to laminated card stock (paper)

My W&B was incorrect, followed the Maintenance Manual procedure including draining the fuel… empty CG moved a crap load… and solved loading issues… years of errors can add up each time something is added or removed, weight the aircraft and have solid numbers to work with

Removal of PC Disconnect Button in 65 M20E Yoke
RLCarter replied to Echo's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
The o-ring gets stuck, add 1 drop of penetrating oil every few days until you can pull it out, mine was pretty crapped up and that was what worked for me. I would imagine you could damage the flange around the outside of the button fairly easy, so use minimal force and your better off prying in 2 spots 180° apart from each other -
Consider changing the title to something that matches the question…. You will probably need the tools to replace the disk, so I’d give LASAR a call, they rent the tools as well… I used them when I rebuilt my gear. The disks have gotten stupid in price so definitely shop around and factor in freight as it can be a shocker too

'65 M20C Exhaust has Major Cracks
RLCarter replied to Fusco's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
I just replaced the complete exhaust system on an 0-300 (6 cyl) 172, just south of 3 grand, only needed both mufflers and 1 riser, but elected to just replace it all, besides it looks good bolted to the 6 new cylinders…. -
Suspected Broken Oil control ring
RLCarter replied to Greg Ellis's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
Not a big fan of the ring flush, all the crap (carbon/coke) goes into the sump and not all of it comes out the drain. I understand MBs concern about pulling cylinders, but I believe too many believe it will be followed by a catastrophic failure…. A cylinder(s) installed CORRECTLY isn’t the issue, but he makes it sound like only overhaul shops or the factory can do it right. I really wish he would focus on the correct procedure rather than ones that failed due incorrect/incomplete procedures. Another area that isn’t mentioned when talking about oil consumption is the valve guides, particularly the intake guide…. My 4:30 am rant complete -
Spin on oil filter busted at the seams
RLCarter replied to woodman86's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
That is a manufacturing issue, I’ve seen several filters fail because of insufficient material being crimped together, granted the ones I’ve seen were Fram motorcycle spin on filters, but the failure was identical. Fram also had an issue with their cartridge type filters where the adhesive that sealed the filter media to the end caps would break off and go through the motor. I’ve also seen a Fram filter that wasn’t crimped all the way around right out of the box. I would send photos and contact them again, Fram denied it had an issue but ended up paying for a lot of motors. Oil starvation in the air could get very expensive real quick -

My current CFI-I which I’ve been flying with every Saturday (weather/maintenance permitting) for the past 4 yrs turned 90 this year. He renewed his CFI after I had been through 5 instructors while working on my commercial, and now we’re finishing up my initial CFI. He’s in really good shape (physical/mental) and can still perform all the maneuvers to ACS/PTS standards, the only thing he has passed me to another CFI for was my Night X-Country and Spin Training. We do local night flights for currency and sightseeing but the x-country was going to run past his (and my) bed time…lol. He also stays current in a Cessna 140 (tail wheel), so as long as he’s able we’re going flying.

Seems a little harsh to ban them from the aircraft
-
Be interesting to see what is found… you mentioned that it sat for 6 month’s waiting on parts, was there any work done on the engine during that time?
-
I joined MS 9 yrs ago, and it was very active, still more activity than the Cessna forum I’m still part of. I sold my E right before COVID, but still come here hoping to get a chance to pay it forward, Anthony was always on no matter the time of day, Paul (GSXRpilot) was also very active, Clearance (M20 Doc) was another anchor here..All in all the members here are a great group so unless I get banned for some reason I’ll continue to check in several times a week
