  1. Your panel looks similar to mine when I bought it. I ditched the KNS80, ADF, stormscope and second comm. It really cleaned things up. I have the 830 but really like it on the pilot side. I previously had the 700 on the right. The installer wanted the 830 vertically (for ease of installation) but I like it horizontal as seen in the pic.
  2. Interesting you should post this. I was flying over the weekend in my J and I have a similar issue. The #4 cylinder in my A3B6 is always running hotter than the others. I thought of baffles also but I'm replacing my plugs with Tempest fine wire in the next week so I'm hoping that takes care of some of it. I talked to a mechanic about it and suggested switching CHT probes but he didn't think the difference was enough to warrant that. I've read not to let the temps get above 380df so 371 is starting to make me nervous.
  3. Always difficult to read these articles. Prayers to the family. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  4. I see there is a member with some avionics posted for sale here with a NSD360 in the mix. Perhaps you could pick it up reasonably as a replacement. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  5. I had a similar issue with mine and replaced it with a used one the shop had sitting around for about $600 plus labor. I was told that when I picked it up that I was on borrowed time with the used one and to start thinking about an Aspen. He said this particular HSI is a "problem child". I went about a year on the second one with no problems but still put the Aspen in. If I recall he said it's about 8 AMUs to rebuild one of these so clearly not worth it if that is true. If you don't want to put an Aspen in I would just find a used one and hope for the best.
  6. Same thing happened to me. I was told it's there way of telling you they don't want to insure you anymore. My agent switched to a different company and it actually went down a little. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  7. I have TKS (inadvertant) in my J and the UL does not include fluid. The system weights around 45 lbs and the fluid comes in at 9.2 lbs per gallon with a 6 gallon capacity. After avionics upgrades, removal of the vacuum system and adding LED lighting I was able to add 30 lbs of UL bringing it up to 900. As we all know, TKS is very valuable in the winter months and if you fly in that climate it's probably worth it. If not, I'd probably keep looking. One more thing, TKS will cost you 4-7 knots in cruise. The best true airspeed I can get is 154. For me here in Iowa it's well worth the sacrifice.
  8. Single pilot IFR with no autopilot at 15,000 feet; please tell us you had supplemental oxygen. On another note, when I first got my IFR ticket I started a little slower. You're right, the real thing is much different than foggles. For the first several months I brought my CFI with me on IFR flights. It was a nice safety net in case something went wrong and fortunately nothing did. Call me conservative but you should consider doing the same. Once I felt more comfortable and my CFI agreed, I started flights on my own. Glad the flight went well for you; it really is a rewarding feeling as you now know.
  9. It might be a little early for this but on September 11th there is an annual flight breakfast at my home airport in Carroll, IA (CIN) and this year we're including an airshow featuring Julie Clark. There is no charge for the event and I just wanted to throw this out to anyone in the area that may want to go. Because this day marks the 15th anniversary of the 911 attacks there will be a very patriot theme. In addition to Julie Clark the Vanguard Squadron will perform in their four RV aircraft that burn 100% ethanol. Should be a fun day. http://julieclarkairshows.com/air-show/ http://vanguardsquadron.com/ flight_breakfast_2016_poster_5.pdf
  10. Sad but true. Opposite rudder, neutral aileron and nose down is what I've always been told. The problem is this sort of event almost always happens at low altitude where it is impossible to recover.
  11. This is really tough to watch but it confirms stall/spin theory.
  12. Found the audio on the other thread. Tough to listen to. I think the controller was very accommodating but getting frustrated, and for good reason. The pilot was rattled but very courteous and apologetic which made it hard for the controller to be too tough on her. It reminds me of when I first started flying and how intimidating ATC can be to new pilots. I can't imagine flying into a bravo airport as a new inexperienced pilot. What a terrible loss.
  13. I've been to liveatc.com and can't find it. I'd like to hear it. If you know where it's at, please post a link. I looked in general and didn't see anything. Should've looked a little further; sorry about that.
  14. Three people killed at KHOU when a SR20 stalls when attempting to land. Judging from the audio, it sounds like the female pilot was very inexperienced and having trouble controlling the airplane. Very sad deal. http://www.click2houston.com/news/audio-recording-between-pilot-and-hobby-airport-sheds-light-on-accident
  15. The shop that does my work told me they're completely swamped with ADS-B installs right now and they're scheduling work several months out. If this is the case elsewhere there's no need for an "incentive". We have a 2020 mandate and we're all required to get our planes compliant; it's not an option. If ADS-B was optional, the rebate would make a whole lot more sense. The incentive that motivated me was the weather and traffic that comes with it and that's worth far more to me than $500. One last thing...how much of the rebate is the consumer really going to get? I have a feeling install labor may creep up and discounts on equipment may change as well. In the end, the shops may be the ones that come out on top.
  16. Here's an interesting tidbit; the rebate only applies to single engine airplanes. They probably figure if you can afford to fly a multi-engine aircraft you don't deserve the rebate. That should piss some M-E owners off. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  17. That's government in action for you. The rebate program itself has me scratching my head; why are they paying people with money they don't have to do what is already mandated?
  18. I bought the Halos for my wife because she complained the A20s messed up her hair. She really likes them buy I've never tried them. After reading this thread I might have to. Her only complaint is she can't turn the volume up enough when she wants to listen to music or watch a show from her ipad. She's using an audio cable from the device to the Halos thus bypassing the intercom system and she has both the ipad and Halo volume turned all the way up. Other than that little issue they've been great for her.
  19. Too many hours for me. You would really have to buy it right because it will be tough to sell when you want to move it.
  20. Lol! I have to admit you had me worried. I have this install scheduled in only a few weeks and I would've been very disappointed to find out wx and traffic didn't display.
  21. Yes it will. I'm installing the 345 next month and everything I've read (and was told) is traffic and weather will display on the GNS series. I have the 530W/430W combo and from Marauders pic above it will work but limited to 8 targets and no TargetTrend or TerminalTraffic. I think he's mistaken on the GDL88 being the only device to work with the GNS boxes. In any case, I'm going to ask my installer again because I wouldn't buy it if it didn't display on my 530W/430W. If you go to 1:47 in this video the 530/430 is compatable.
  22. I had my prop balanced about 2-3 years ago and got in down to .06. It was a very windy day and apparently the calmer the winds, the better. My question is how often should it be done? I had it done a few months after the factory remanned engine was installed and now 150 hours later it seems like some of the vibration has come back. It's not bad, just doesn't seem quite as smooth as it was after the balance.
  23. Engine compression of 62 on the #1 Cylinder? I'm guessing that's a typo.
  24. Terrible. The pilot reported smoke in the cabin before crashing. Turbo Bonanza.
  25. The red X is required fuel; he doesn't have a destination programmed into his GPS. My 830 only shows 4 cylinders so it must me a setup issue.
