I knew I wasn't completely crazy but wanted to be accurate. I emailed my avionics shop and he replied the "M" in the part number means lighted so yes it is lighted. I'm going to give it a few more days and then post it on ebay so let me know if anyone is at all interested. Thanks.

If memory serves, my guy charged me one hour of labor. He told me that's essentially in-flight calibration. There really is no work involved which is what makes the Aspen AOA so attractive.

Byron, I'm 95% sure it is lighted but I will find out for sure. Sounds crazy that I wouldn't know for sure but it's been a while since I've used this for primary and can't imagine only my panel lights lit this up but I will find out for sure. This unit also drove my autopilot before I installed the Aspen EA-100.

I have a Edo-Air / Mitchell AI that was recently removed from my M20J as part of an upgrade. It was working normally at the time of removal in January 2016. Model 1U367, Mitchell part number 52D266M, Part number 1U367-202-2, S/N 5340A. $300.00 and free domestic shipping via UPS. Feel free to PM me with questions. -Kevin

You may not care about the new features of version 15. I think it's probably simple to detach from the instrument panel, but you have to disconnect the p/s lines, and I think that requires a static re-cert, doesn't it? The fact that the software can't be field updated suggest to me they don't expect new software to be a frequent need. Just bad timing. I agree. Perhaps when it's in the shop the next time I'll get it done. For now everything is fine and I'll get by without the added features. Thanks Tony for your help and insight. Forgot to mention that. Unfortunately yes. I wish I knew there was an update because I would've had it sent back before install.

So I went up today and played around with the SIA340 a bit. It performs very well. I'm impressed with the resolution of the display. I think once the smoke clears and we all know definitively whether or not this can be used as a backup to the Aspen and G500 I think it's going to be very popular. You'll see from the video that the airspeed is just a hair off from the Aspen but the altitude is 35 ft off. I went into the settings once on the ground and corrected for both so now they should match. Next flight will tell for sure. What surprised me the most is the fuel flow in the 830. I knew it was reading too high burning 12.5 gal/hr in cruise. After I landed it showed that I burned 18.5 gal total. When I topped it off I put in 15.9 gal. I do the math and the K-factor goes from 29.34 to 34.16. Can that be right? I thought this number sits between 29.00 and 31.00. Weird. One last thing. As I was putting my plane back in the hanger a G-V landed. I get everything squared away and as I'm leaving this it sitting there. It's Hillary Clinton's ride. Can't say I'm a Hillary fan but that's a big ship for KCIN. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I don't know about the re-cert. I need to read the logs but I sure hope so. I'm far from an expert (as you all can probably tell) but he had to have cut into the pitot lines and add a T. One would think a leak test would follow. Thanks for the help on this. I'll let you guys know what I hear next week. He's currently out from rotator cuff surgery so I'm not sure how available he will be but I'll pass on info as I get it.

I'm interpreting this a little differently. It reads: A single function vacuum-driven attitude indicator may also be replaced with an electronically-driven attitude indicator that provides a secondary (advisory) function (such as turn & slip indication). The "such as" tells me that altitude and airspeed are also "advisory" functions and therefore I'm within the requirements. In any case I want it to be legal. I plan on talking to the installer next week. In regard to your second Aspen, I was told by my installer that it qualifies as backup as long as a standby battery backup is also installed. He doesn't believe the backup battery included with the Aspen qualifies.

When I had the SAI340 installed I had the vacuum system removed because all it powered was the backup AI that the 340 replaced. I got the plane back on Thursday and just yesterday I read an article in the Feb 2016 issue of The Aviation Consumer about the SAI340 and L3 Genesis. According to the article, neither of these units are legal backups to the Aspen PFD because the STC manaual reads that the standby electric AI must not rely on pitot and static air input for it's operation and both of these unit do. The logic being an iced pitot tube can take both systems down. I'm not sure I agree. An iced pitot tube would take down airspeed on both but not attitude, right? So the RCA2600 is legal because it has no altitude and airspeed but the 340 and L3 aren't if I'm understanding this correctly. If anyone has this magazine, it's on page 2. What do you guys think? The work has already been completed and signed off on.

It's very close. I'm going up today to play with it in more detail so I'll report back. Maybe I'll post some video.

Help me spend my money plane shopping!

The tank reseal in 5632Y is a definite plus. I have the s-tec 60 pss in my J and one thing to ask is if it has auto-trim. Mine didn't and I broke down and added it. Without it you just have to manually trim the aircraft. In level flight it's not really and issue. It's nice to have when intercepting a glide slope. If memory serves it was a $6-7K. Not a deal breaker but something to consider. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -
I bought the Aspen AOA also and been very happy with it. I too was unsure how cumbersome it would be and if so how much I would use it but I have to say I'm mentally trained to use it on both takeoff and landing; more so on takeoff and especially in IFR. I tend to watch both the AOA and airspeed simultaneously as they're on the same display. I have only one Aspen but it's my understanding one license covers a dual screen setup. Paul, I've been thinking about buying a GoPro and just curious if the sticky adhesives can damage the paint. Have you had any problems removing the mounts? Thanks, Kevin

Does anyone know how often that estimator is updated and who does the numbers. Back when Jimmy Garrison was writing the columns for MAPA, they were redone every few months. It is my understanding the Flyer version is/was based on Jimmy's numbers, but I don't know if it is an ongoing process. I've wondered this also. My guess is not in a while. There are many avionic upgrades that aren't "adds" to the value. ADS-B, dual gps and glass (such as Aspen PFD) come to mind. It's helpful for a rough number but I think needs some work. I've thought about installing extensions. I have a 82 J. Are they easy to install? I assume I could legally install them myself. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Replacing vacuum gyro artificial horizon with electric
kevinw replied to NotarPilot's topic in General Mooney Talk
I dropped off my J at the avionics shop this morning. I already have an Aspen PFD and opted for the EA100 digital to analog autopilot converter when it was installed. The EA100 allows my autopilot to get its input from the Aspen versus the old attitude indicator I kept as backup. So now I'm having the vacuum system and standy vacuum completely removed. The backup AI is being replaced with the Sandia Quattro 340. While it's in the shop and torn apart I'm replacing my EDM700 with an 830. The 700 was on the fritz and JPI has an inexpensive upgrade path. Not sure how soon I'll get it back; the weather here in Iowa has screwed up the installer's schedule. Hopefully 10 days or so is all. I'll let you guys know how it turns out. -
Nice work! One of the best I've watched. Keep 'em coming! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Bose A20 vs Lightspeed PFX PIREP
kevinw replied to NotarPilot's topic in Miscellaneous Aviation Talk
I love my A20s. Bought two sets shortly after buying my plane. I was advised by my local CFI that if I wanted my wife to enjoy flying with me to have comfortable noise cancelling headsets and a good audio panel / intercom system. Mission accomplished with the A20s and a PMA7000b. -
It's a little early but in a few years that's what I'll be looking for! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Lance, thanks for the pirep. Very good info for anyone considering a panel upgrade and torn between Garmin and Avidyne. What are your plans for the R? I thought after picking up the M you might have pulled the 540 (and 440) out of the R and installed them in the new bird. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
