  1. It was New Bern, NC.
  2. That's right but visibility does matter and @SantosDumont told us about low visibility due to the hard rain.
  3. Do you fly VFR through hard rain?
  4. The good news is that you probably can't make it look much worse.
  5. There's one on eBay right now. It doesn't look pretty but you could probably strip and paint it. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Shaw-Fuel-Cap-431-9-or-PS380035-1-/262809585940?hash=item3d30ac0914:g:hFwAAOSw2xRYfCuy&vxp=mtr
  6. The electronic ignition typically only replaces a single magneto. The other magneto is still available to keep the engine running in case of failure of the EIS.
  7. Royalite is a brand name for a particular type of ABS.
  8. Item 80 on the second page is an optional blower. I don't know if it was an option for the K model as well.
  9. He's also looking for a prop.
  10. What hourly rate are you paying for the 4 hours?
  11. 1963 M20D 8 years. 1981 M20J 3 years. 900 hours between the two.
  12. It is very unlikely that your phone had anything to do with it. The SIM card just authenticates your phone/device on the network. The functionality will be controlled by your device and your account. You could try putting the SIM back in your phone and sending a text message to make sure messaging is working correctly on your account. Just make sure you send an SMS rather than an iMessage.
  13. On my 1963 D I sometimes had to tap on the MP gauge to get the needle to move following a power reduction. I think the needles may have been physically interfering with each other.
  14. Here are the diagrams from the J parts catalog.
  15. The Declaration of Independence is not part of the legal framework of this country.
  16. Discrimination really only applies to treating different groups differently in the same context or activity. As long as all people wanting to fly airplanes are treated the same then it is not discrimination. Flying is also not the only activity with medical standards. There are medical conditions that disqualify you from driving. Perhaps not as rigorous as flying but they exist nontheless. Perhaps most relevant is the legal principle that driving is a privelege, not a right. Why would flying be more of a right than driving?
  17. If you look at that part in context it just says that if you have certain conditions you had to have had a special issuance medical. If your special issuance medical was granted then you are eligible for the new BasicMed rules going forward.
  18. Fair enough. I guess it was the all-caps and all the exclamation points that gave me that impression.
  19. 1) Go re-read the original post and look at the pictures. He wasn't in the pattern. He was 5 miles out and his gear was up. 2) I have done nothing but defend him against the dentist's claims so I think your ire is misdirected. 3) Please re-read my last post. It and my calculations were not critical of his actions in any way. In fact I said he didn't have time to troubleshoot. If you want to pick a fight you should find someone else to fight with.
  20. That's not the OP's plane. It looks like it might be the M20J that George Perry posted about that was donated to AOPA. How recent is that photo? The plane in the background is listed as deregistered.
  21. For older logbooks it seems that most of the value should be in the information as opposed to the physical logbook. When buying an aircraft it is nice to be able to go through all the logs from beginning to end to look at things like age of components, AD compliance, and possible major repairs. Digital versions seem like they serve that purpose pretty well. Hopefully we'll get to the point where the GA community views digital copies as "complete."
  22. M20J cowls can tend to ride up. You would need to look closely to determine how much might be engine vs cowl.
  23. According to my POH you get about 2nm of glide from 1000AGL at best glide speed (~90 knots). It takes about 80 seconds to travel 2nm at 90 knots. It takes a little time to identify that you have a problem and then the priorities should be 1) fly the plane and 2) find the best field. Not much time left for troubleshooting before all attention has to be dedicated to putting it down as safely as possible. If you try to troubleshoot first you risk losing an opportunity to find a safe landing area.
  24. Be careful if you are planning to fly into Kestrel Airpark. The runway isn't even close to level. There is a significant slope at the approach end of runway 12.
