  1. Nothing is completely foolproof. The Johnson bar is still attached to a mechanical system and anything mechanical can fail.
  2. Not quite sure what that means. All I can say is there's nothing theoretical about the safety of my family.
  3. Thanks for all the input. My wife hasn't actually spent much time in the back of our D but she is worried that she will soon lose her spot in the front to one of the kids. Useful load is likely to become an issue in a few years since those kids keep growing. It seems like just about the same time Mooney switched to the split rear seats they also started adding extra insulation (and other heavy stuff?) and the J's started losing useful load.
  4. I'm in the process of shopping for an M20J as a replacement for my 1963 M20D and I have a question about the bench seats in the early J's. in my D the seat back on the bench seat feels very nearly vertical. I was wondering if anyone can tell me if the J bench seats are reclined at a more comfortable angle. The "banker" doesn't like the bench seat in the D and is pushing for a J with split rear seats. Based on what I've seen the split seats will cost me in both price and useful load.
  5. I had an incident that was not pilot error and my rates still went up.
  6. I'm surprised nobody has suggested stripping off all that heavy paint and going with a polished aluminum look.
  7. "Mooney purchase from an individual, similar to buying a lawn mower from a neighbor, no state taxes due." In many states you would be expected to pay "use tax" on the purchase of an airplane from another individual. Many people choose not to do this and hope that their state revenue department doesn't find out but it would probably be wise to find out what the tax laws are in your state.
  8. No, it's manual (J-Bar). That would be quite the conversion though; all the way from fixed gear to electric. I wonder if anyone has done that with a D. In my case a retraction tube broke and the right main gear wouldn't extend.
  9. My D was converted to retractable gear way back in the 60's. I'm only aware of a couple left with fixed gear. I actually recently had an issue with that retractable gear and ended up having to do a belly landing. I suppose I would have been better off with the fixed gear.
  10. I had the PlanePower conversion installed on my 1963 M20D a little over a year ago when the generator died. Best money I have ever spent on my plane. I can now run all my radios and all my lights while taxiing at big airports. Jeff
