  1. My question would be, how do you keep a grass strip well maintained when groundhogs are laughing and partying nearby?
  2. A bit of history you might want to review...... When J.D. Rockefeller was asked at a high level social event about the cost of his new yacht, he replied "If you have to ask you can't afford it". Example, I recently found out I can't afford my bargain bought golf cart tow motor.
  3. Hmn: As previously mentioned, Aerofly 2 from the app store for $5.00 gives a pretty good ride. Red Bird gave me vertigo and the final bill was about the same as Inst. dual in a C172.
  4. After mastering the Chevrolet 172, I put full throttle to the F18 in solid Ifr. First two takeoffs resulted in spinning gyros and loud crashing noises. A bit better now, but still hard to slow down for a landing. Sort of like a Mooney with no speed brakes.
  5. Recovering nicely. Just another vote for flying single engine in daylight hours. (Unlike the last Mooney down) Enough said.
  6. As a general rule, if anything is going to happen, it will happen when one starts the engine. I think it has a sort of KABOOM sound. Never experienced this myself, just passing on urban legends. With that in mind, if you can start the engine and taxi, the flight should go well. As a side note, when I was a young'un, my dad once stopped a bad tank leak on an old 40 ford with a bar of soap. However, unable to find any documentation under aircraft tank seals for this method of tank sealing.
  7. Anyone using Fore Flights newly released synthetic vision? The accompanying video looked great. Would like to hear comments of any new users experiences. Best, DH
  8. Advance Paint tech. Ltd. Avail in nine colors., Fast turn around, Pro. work. 4650 W. 160th. St. Cleveland, Ohio 44135 216-676-8770
  9. Somewhat of a cat's meow here. 1. If you offer too much you leave $$ on the table. 2. If you offer too little and T the seller off, deal is finished. 3. One way might be to have a friend low ball the offer to see how much flexibility the seller has. (This has worked for me many times in the real estate mkt.) 4. When negotiating, remember the first concession the seller makes will be the largest, so If the seller drops price say $20,000 on second go around, don't ask for more than his initial drop. (He won't do it) 5. So much in any negotiation, just depends. Perhaps the bank is breathing down his neck, perhaps the ex-wife wants her $$$ now. One never knows until a written offer is made. Good Luck!!!
  10. For me, current tech change is almost overwhelming. It was a mere 88 years ago, 1927, that Lindberg flew from San Diego to St. Louis then NY and on to Paris with an earth inductor compass. No whiskey compass for this non-imbiber. Fast forward to 2015 and we are blessed with the following: Geo-referenced approach plates Synthetic Vision--(down loaded yesterday). Coupled autopilots AOA indicators ADSB Runway Extensions Noise canceling headphones Back up AHRS Virtually paperless cockpit Touch Screen Navigation. Stratus 2, in flight weather Winds aloft rapidly calculated for both low and high altitudes via Forflight. Best wind, hence, best runway for uncontrolled fields via Foreflight And of course the big iron flys with autothrottle on nearly every flight. Acknowledged, the above is remiss with many unlisted advances, but to end with the last six words of Steve Jobs tech created life seems appropriate: "Oh Wow, Oh Wow, Oh Wow.
  11. Has to be behind the new "Clorox bottle Mooney" with that high torque, low rpm diesel engine.
  12. Understand Santa put his sleigh down at 11:35 pm in Jackson Ms. last night. 400 overcast with 30 knot crosswinds. Donner was a bit agitated, but Rudolph and Santa continued to party on. Now Montreal, that's a different story.
  13. John and Martha. No comparison.
  14. Sounds like the big radials. Probably nothing to worry about, just marking its territory.
  15. Pretty much the same result, but I am a bit biased toward Sully's landing in the Hudson. Assume he also landed gear up. As they say " Any landing you can swim away from".
  16. A bit of a lane shift, but for those interested, understand Foreflight is bringing it. Ie, synthetic vision to be released just after X-mas. Those guys should take some time off.
  17. No problem with technology. Years ago when I was learning to drive a stick shift in mountainous terrain, my father would continuously admonish me by saying, "David you are going to tear the reach out of her". It was years later while accidently viewing covered horse drawn wagon parts that I discovered the pole that connects the front axel to the back axel was called the reach. I guess the modern techy terms of universal joint or drive shaft was still alien to my father. Moving to the present just viewed a 'True Detective" scenario whereby a poor sole was carjacked, robbed and kidnapped at gun point. After his escape and while at the police station, the detective made a few phone calls to "On-Star". Long story short, car was located precisely and all three bad guys are up for a long time. In summary, technology is a bit like a girl friend in high school. Sometimes good, sometimes , well you know.
  18. Sometimes I think those "Stepping on the flap" oil change guys can be as bad as the "Golf cart riding linemen that over torque the nose wheel." Seems like, same as a baby, we should never let her out of our sight.
  19. On this one, I have no advice to give.
  20. Gasoline is a great solvent. In the 70's, the only place we could get our greasy DC-6s washed with gas was in Haiti. ( Understand that service is still available) They always flew back to Miami sparkling clean and grease free. Not sure why no one at the local airport would do the job?? As an after thought, you might try a small spot with paint thinner. Remember, that's thinner and not remover. The containers look the same. Best, DH
  21. My old F-150 can do that trip hands down at $2.56 per gallon. Advance scheduling and reservations required. Best, DH
  22. First we were talking about starting an engine then we have morphed to putting a "Finger in the other plug hole. Now I am totally lost. If my wife catches reading this porn, there will really be problems. Must turn off for now and have my morning coffee before this post goes any deeper.
  23. My IO550 flew flawlessly 450 hours past TBO. Just discount the price of the overhaul on purchase and add about 20% for misc.(At least) Ie, freight, prop and governor, engine mounts, labor, new hose kit, muffler and so on.
  24. Very nice!! Recommend you brush up on your Mandarin as I would suspect Kerrville will soon be nominating you for "Employee of the month". Best, DH
  25. Concerning those falling coconut deaths, it is important to note those are not random incidents. Those coconuts are being hurled by p...off monkeys and orangutans. Tourist beware!!
