Its not my J, just one that I have taken care of for 3 years while the owner (Joe Dion) was living and working in SF. He didn't want the Caliban to have at his wallet, so he left it in Clearwater for me to use and take care of for him. This, and the Bravo I fly, are the main driving forces behind me selling my wonderful F a couple of years ago. I didn't have the time to fly them all, and instruct, and pay attention to my bride. Joe would visit this very efficient J a couple of times a year. Recently he had Hawk paint it. Thurs, he plans to fly it to Mesquite, Tx where he now lives and works. I took these photos for Joe when I was flying it back from prebuy in Longview to Clearwater about 3 years ago. I actually saw 160 TAS and 8.3 GPH in her. WOT/2400 RPM, The rest is on the gauges in the photos in the above post. For almost 3 years, I routinely saw great speeds at all power settings ROP and LOP. Joe did a write-up of our training in the Mooney Flyer about a year or so ago. Here is a pic taken a few weeks ago at Hawk, she still needs her wheel britches on.

IFD 540 Question - Holding
mike_elliott replied to midlifeflyer's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
I was given a holding clearance to a NOTAM'd OTS NDB at Flora, Il. one day when Midwest M20 had an open house. There were Mooneys stacked up at the VOR, I thought it unusual that ATC did this. I was just as guilty as I accepted it, did a very slow lap and let them know I could be down and cancelled in less than 5 min, so I was cleared for the approach then. The NDB was easily identified with my GPS and SA was with the class leading anywhere map software (at that time). In fact, most of the holds I have been given in real IFR has been at NDB's. I haven't been given a hold lately, as I typically will negotiate and slow down to allow things to "clear" up. -

Adding External Power Receptacle
mike_elliott replied to Bob_Belville's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
I have now, Bob, thanks. Carrying one of these is a waste of useful load on a 28V system, but would be great on a 12V. I am building a "portable" jump starter/APU out of my "old" Gill 28V batteries that I can also use to fire G1000 equipped Mooney avionics for instruction when I have transition students. This would work for it, but Ill get the less expensive plug and build a set of cables. AS has a set already made, but 1.5 amu's is a bit price ambitious for my needs. -
Carlus Gann is a noted engine builder and should be able to fight the fight for you with Lycoming. He maintains and builds engines for a number of high profile clients because of his reputation for first class work. I completely concur with DVA, you cant just pop off 6 jugs and bolt back on 6 new ones without severely risking misalignment. Heck on the Bravo, there is 10-15 hrs worth of hose R&R. As DVA stated, Lycoming knows this, and should have made this "reimbursement restriction" known to you up front. I doubt if Lycoming would R&R the engine, change the cylinders, test, and document for 20 hrs at $70 per. Maybe Carlus can post $160/hr shop rate for Mooney Bravo Cyl replacement and charge 20 hours to meet their "requirements"

We received $27 from Amazon last quarter from everyone's purchases who selected The Mooney Summit, Inc. as their charity on www.smile.amazon.com. Those of you who have selected the Mooney Summit as your charity and used smile.amazon.com, thank you from the entire Mooney community. Those that haven't yet, please consider this as we head into the holiday season. Your kindness will go to help a Mooney family when they need it the most. -

GTX345 not playing nice with Foreflight
mike_elliott replied to wrench's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
Well, I stand corrected. FLYQ reset itself 2 times today. No temp issues, no other progs running, just simply shut down. I didn't have time to test wingx, but will soon. -
GTX345 not playing nice with Foreflight
mike_elliott replied to wrench's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
I have not observed an issue with L3 Lynx, Ipad and FLyq. Perhaps next IOS "update" I can enjoy the pain you feel with Foreflight also. -
Glenn, you will probably never find as sweet of setup as you had in Indy being so close to your Hanger in you beautiful home. Congrats on the retirement! Come on down to SNF a few days early each year and we can knock out the IPC's and FR's for you.

Had this happen to my 70 F model about 10 years ago. Was found fairly easily after cleaning up the engine real well and then using Magnaflux developer on it. Run the engine pretty hard for about 10 min and it showed me right where the leak was. That little pin hole could spray a lot of oil on things!

When I thought about engaging "younger" to enable the succession and insure the Mooney Summit's longevity, the virility attribute hadn't entered my mind. Congrats Seth, Meghan!. It looks like we can be working on generation 3 of attendee's already! Maybe a "back seat ready" course, or "diapers at altitude". My son and Mooney Summiit Board member Nick Elliott and his wife Mari are also expecting. Grandchild #4

Clarence, do you know why Loctite is frowned upon by the powers who govern the installation universe of F * r * sin(theta)?
