Bill_Carter Posted May 31, 2013 Report Posted May 31, 2013 Hi folks, I was thinking of obtaining a Class 2 medical certificate for my next physical. I haven't done this before and was wondering what the differance in the examination is. I thought I my want to do this becuase I may have an opportunity to go for a commercial ticket in the next year or two. Thoughts? And thanks! Quote
Bill_Carter Posted May 31, 2013 Author Report Posted May 31, 2013 I looked up the examination criteria, but it didn't seem any different. So, I thought I'd ask. Quote
M20F-1968 Posted May 31, 2013 Report Posted May 31, 2013 Since I am an AME in Massachusetts who does Class I, II and III exams, I'll put out an answer to this one. Classes one and two have more stringent standards for vision. In Classes one and two, distant vision must be 20/20 or correctable to 20/20. In third class exams, distant vision must be 20/40 or correctable to 20/20. There is an intermediate vision exam (at 32") as well as the usual near vision exam (at 16") which is added if 50 years old or older. The main difference between Class three and the higher classes of exams is the vision section of the exam. I am an AME in Concord, MA. If I can help with medical exam issues, my phone is (617) 877-0025. Thanks, John Breda Quote
Bill_Carter Posted May 31, 2013 Author Report Posted May 31, 2013 Thanks John. That is exactly what I was hoping to find out. I appreciate the offer for help too. I think I will go ahead and get the Class II vice the Class III. If I was in your neck of the woods, I would come see you, but I am a bit of a distance from Mass. Quote
Skywarrior Posted May 31, 2013 Report Posted May 31, 2013 Also, the Class II exam has limits on the amount of heterophoria (cross-eye) between your eyes. Until I get surgery on one of my eyes to correct that, I have to stick with a Class III. Quote
Super Dave Posted May 31, 2013 Report Posted May 31, 2013 You may already know this, but you do not need a second class to get your commercial certificate, it's only required to exercise the commercial privileges. Quote
Bill_Carter Posted May 31, 2013 Author Report Posted May 31, 2013 I will have to study up on this further. I did not know that Dave. Quote
fantom Posted May 31, 2013 Report Posted May 31, 2013 My AME charges the same for a Class II or a Class III, so guess which one I get every two years. Quote
drapo Posted June 2, 2013 Report Posted June 2, 2013 Bizarre... Up here in Canada, a class 2 is for ATC only, so I have both a class 2 and 3... Quote
jetdriven Posted June 2, 2013 Report Posted June 2, 2013 My Dr. charges 100$ for a Class II and an extra 50$ to skip the vision test. I'm a cheap bastard, so i memorized the vision chart and stick it to the man.... Quote
