bnicolette Posted March 2, 2013 Report Posted March 2, 2013 Hi folks, My annual is coming up this month and I am toying with the idea of having a new windscreen installed. Does anybody have an estimate of time/labor to install the windscreen? Quote
MARZ Posted March 2, 2013 Report Posted March 2, 2013 My conversion took about 40. IIRC the placement of the windshield was about 12 hours of that Quote
mulro767 Posted March 2, 2013 Report Posted March 2, 2013 Willmar Air Service quoted me $1800 all in. It's more for the .25" as it requires more labor hours. But they said 8-10 hours. Mine's getting bad. Quote
bnicolette Posted March 3, 2013 Author Report Posted March 3, 2013 Yes, mine is getting bad also. I believe it is now becoming a safety issue with the crazing and thinking about just plugging forward during the annual. My mechanic is sometimes a bit "slow" but he is also very thorough. I just want to get a ballpark and try to get him to cap to cost of it. Quote
Jamie Posted March 3, 2013 Report Posted March 3, 2013 Willmar did all of my windows in January. Total cost was $3015. That's $280 for the 0.25" windshield (the glass was itemized), and 23 hours of labor for everything. Quote
N201MKTurbo Posted March 4, 2013 Report Posted March 4, 2013 My dad and I did mine in about 12 hours. I'm an A&P and he is a master carpenter, a good combination. The plastic was about $350. Sealant was about $30.00 Quote
M016576 Posted March 4, 2013 Report Posted March 4, 2013 My dad and I did mine in about 12 hours. I'm an A&P and he is a master carpenter, a good combination. The plastic was about $350. Sealant was about $30.00 Amazing how 380 dollars in parts and a good days work ends up costing most of us $3000. Just like the interiors... 500 bucks in materials and 12-15 hours of work becomes 10,000. I guess GA is a small enough market, and it's patrons are well enough off that unless you DIY, you are forced to spend the big bucks :-(. Economies of scale, I suppose... Quote
bnicolette Posted March 4, 2013 Author Report Posted March 4, 2013 I was quoted $1K to a max of $1.5K from my local MSC. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD Quote
320KPH Posted March 11, 2013 Report Posted March 11, 2013 576 The work may take a day but they can charge two.... cest la vie Quote
N201MKTurbo Posted March 11, 2013 Report Posted March 11, 2013 Two people for eight hours @$75/hr = $1200.00 in labor plus $400.00 in parts. $1500.00 sounds like a fair deal. Quote
bnicolette Posted March 11, 2013 Author Report Posted March 11, 2013 Thanks all. My plane is going in on the 26th of March to start the annual. I am going for the new windshield this time around. Ill post the resulting cost if they itemize the bill. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD Quote
quik flite Posted March 13, 2013 Report Posted March 13, 2013 Are you taking it to Weber Aircraft for your work ,I have always found them very fairly priced and very good at the work they do. They are a Mooney Service Center. Quote
bnicolette Posted March 14, 2013 Author Report Posted March 14, 2013 No I'm not going to Weber. I have used them in the past and have been most impressed with them. I am using my local shop who has spent much time with my airplane this year. The shop is very professional and its nice to have them located right on my home field. http://www.aeroinnovationsinc.com They are a bit pricey, even more than Weber, but the added bonus of having them right here through the year is a big plus for me. bnicolette Posted April 6, 2013 Author Report Posted April 6, 2013 Annual is complete and window is well underway. I e been helping off and on through the annual and was lucky enough to stop in today just in time for the scraping of the old sealant. Whoa!!!! What a huge PITA!! N201MKTurbo Posted April 6, 2013 Report Posted April 6, 2013 Scraping sealant off a windshield frame is nothing compared to doing a fuel tank... Quote
N201MKTurbo Posted April 6, 2013 Report Posted April 6, 2013 Wow a hand mic, havn't seen one of those in years... Quote
bnicolette Posted April 6, 2013 Author Report Posted April 6, 2013 Wow a hand mic, havn't seen one of those in years... Yep, I just can't bring myself to get rid of it. Have fond memories of my dad using the one in his Cherokee six back in the early 80's and I always thought it was the coolest thing!! SO, I just won't take mine out. 1 Quote
bnicolette Posted April 9, 2013 Author Report Posted April 9, 2013 Does anyone know if we are increasing the thickness to 1/4 if the side to top exterior panels have to be removed also? Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD Quote
mulro767 Posted April 9, 2013 Report Posted April 9, 2013 Wow a hand mic, havn't seen one of those in years... When I upgraded my panel I thought about getting rid of the hand mic. But I kept it and love getting my clearance using it and the speaker. But I can't think of any other use for the hand mic, or the speaker. But who knows? Maybe the boom mic on my Bose A20 will fail someday? No worries. Quote
bnicolette Posted April 10, 2013 Author Report Posted April 10, 2013 Window is ground, shaved, cut, ground, sanded, fitted, etc....... Wow what a PITA that was! Ready for sealant and it is going in tomorrow. Quote
N601RX Posted April 11, 2013 Report Posted April 11, 2013 Almost there. If any of the sealent accidently gets on anything, don't try to get it off, it will just make a bigger mess. Let dry for 24 hrs so it isn't as sticky and they you can get it off easily with your finger nail. I did my side windows about 2 years ago and am about to put in the 201 windshield conversion. Quote
bnicolette Posted April 11, 2013 Author Report Posted April 11, 2013 I took advantage of the window being out and replaced all the defrost tubing. Yikes were they in bad shape!!!!!! Quote
bnicolette Posted April 12, 2013 Author Report Posted April 12, 2013 Back in her own bed. Annual and window is complete. Hallelujah!! Quote
