First let me say that I searched for this topic and could find no discussion, so if this has been discussed please point me to the thread(s).

Second, I am not wanting to start any sort of territorial war with the topic, so candid  and experiential opinions please with no mudslinging.

Now that the disclaimers are out of the way, can anyone comment on the pros and cons of these two organizations? I now own a '66 M20E Super 21 and want to join an organization that reflects my interests. I would like the organization to lean towards or at least support heavily, or possibly have a large membership contingent of the Pre-J Mooneys.

Even though I now own a Mooney and are lavishing gifts on her, I like to think I don't have more money than sense and can justify only one organization.

If there is a third or fourth organization I am certainly interested. I already belong to AOPA and browse Vintage Mooney and Mooniacs occasionally. Of course, Mooneyspace is the best overall for info and cost Smile

Hi Harley,

MOA is currently shut down.  The website is up and sort of running, but their magazine is dormant.  I tried to join and was sent an email from the guy running it that they are not excepting new memberships at this time and may start up again at some point in the future.

MAPA is running strong and you can download past issues of their magazine in pdf form once your a member.

MAPA (I'm a member) is "OK" for info and the Magazine is a good read.  They also offer Mooney gear for sale on thier website, but, overall MAPA is not very tech savvy.  Their methods of collaboration and information dissemination are dated.  The MooneySpace website on the other hand is a much better forum for free flow of information and resources.

I gave up on MAPA a while back, because it hurt my eyes to read it. Not to cast aspersions, but here's what I was thinking: If people who go to the trouble to publish a monthly magazine can't figure out the difference between your and you're, or its and it's, and misspell the names of airplane parts, what important  details are also in error? You see, I don't know much about aircraft technical details, and would be hard pressed to catch a possibly costly mistake. I DO know fourth-grade grammar and spelling, though, and there the publication obviously fell short. But I miss both the magazine and the organization, and need to grit my editorial teeth and rejoin, hoping that the important stuff is all correct.

As for MOA, all I needed to know was the editor/instigator's name and well-deserved reputation. No further comment.

I agree about the MAPA web page. It would be lovely if the organization could take advantage of some of its members' expertise there.  And FWIW, my offer to provide free proofreading still stands.

I am a long-standing member of MAPA, and joined MOA when it started. I subscribed to MOA for two or three years, then didn't receive many magazines.   I do concur that the MOA magazine was more technical.

I believe in MAPA.  I appreciate that they spend thousands of dollars, if not tens of thousands to attend OshKosh this year [and every year].  Our Mooney Airplane Company chose not to go for financial reasons.  They are present, responsive, and have had the best Mooney Minds contributing over the years.  The MAPA forum is frequented by the likes of Don Kaye, Don Maxwell, Stacey Ellis, Paul Lowen and others.  I think that every Mooney owner should be a member of MAPA.  It is a grass-roots group with a long history. And without new members, it won't grow.  Just my two cents.

I agree also. The MAPA membership is not expensive. The resource is fantastic. I can't think of any reason why a Mooney owner would not be a member.

MOA is based in Nokomis, FL (Venice, FL) and features lots of articles by Coy Jacobs.  Read into this as you will, but Coy is the owner of Mooney Mart and MOA appears to be nothing more than a vehicle for them.  There are some interesting articles in their old magazines, but always some unwritten ads for Mooney Mart...  I am not sure that there is much substance beyond that.  MAPA seemsRealize that this is only one persons opinion though.

Well I wasn't going to post on this thread, but what the hay. I gave up on MAPA in 02' after the big internal shakeup that ended with Trey Hughes back at the helm. It is my opinion that MAPA is a vehicle for Falcon much like MOA is for Mooneymart. I think both offer a good magazine with some interesting reading from the best Mooneydom has to offer, for me though its not worth the price of admission. I get most of what I need to know from AOPA, and a forum like this will help a lot in the Mooney specific arena.

Interior power struggles seem to be a feature of most topic specific group publications and support clubs. Sounds like we should protect and support what we have here. MOA seemed like a crisis of the month bunch to me and MAPA is just weak on substance. Fly on.

OK, my Turn,

Being a member of all three at one point or another: here's what I've experienced:

First, MOA was 'iffy' about three years ago and as happened to others on this forum, I was one of those that received nothing for my 'discounted' 2 year renewal. In my case, however, they did take my money and i was never informed of any plans to stop their publications. It was obvious that it was an outlet for Mooney Mart and Coy's operation in FL, but that was alright. As for MAPA, I'm still a member and will continue to support them. While they may be a bit behind the times, they are the best source of information technical as well as mechanical that I've seen ANYWHERE..including Mooneyspace....(sorry guys)....I love Mooneyspace for the comraderie and the fellowship that exists here, but if I've got any technical issue that I may have a question on, I turn to MAPA for that. responses from people such as Bill; Don; Kelly; and some of the other excellent A/P/I's/CF?? on the board and even the factory are usually immediate. HAving said that, some people on the list can get a bit critical on some issues and go WAAAAAYYYY overboard with their views on some topics, but those are easily bypassed with the 'Delete' function we all have access to. I excersise that right judiciously when a topic starts going way off focus and people get out of hand....simple to resolve!.

A combination of MAPA and Mooneyspace would be a godsend. Convincing some of the people on MAPA to convert, however, is going to be a monumental task at best.

With the exception of MOA, Each has it's own merits as well as drawbacks, MOA has only drawbacks.

This issue was posted in great length on the MAPA List about 9-12 months ago or so.  After much posting debate, the group felt that a LIST was superior to a FORUM.  I prefer a FORUM myself as it is easier to find and respond to THREADS that you are interested in.

But most of the MAPA members felt that the LIST was more immediate and more responsive to queries so it has remained as is.

I think the MAPA LIST and this FORUM have slightly different focuses (foci) and worthwhile to visit both regularly

I have belonged to both (when both were operational), and dropped MOA.  I will confess I preferred MAPA's magazine when Kromer was the Executive Director, but it is still a good source of Mooney information. I prefer to get the electronic magazine instead of paper.  I never fully trusted MOA, primarily because of the association with Mr. Jacobs.  He might be a fine gentleman, I don't know him, but my only attempt to deal with his company left me feeling like I had been in a bad used car lot.  I trust MAPA, if MOA revives from its DOA status, I probably won't buy their services.
