It is sensationalism indeed and it is what we try to combat in the press with regards to general aviation.  It is irresponsible journalism, if you can call it journalism.

As much as we don't like to talk about it, our flying freedoms and how the public perceives us is highly political.  When we see some pathetic headline like this, it has the ability to knock us down a few notches in the public eye.

We all fight hard to limit this type of sensationalism in news reporting.  Sitting back and letting it ride without protesting something like this is irresponsible on our part.  It just can't go unchallenged.

We all have tons of negative issues to deal with in our general aviation world, and this one is no exception.  We have to speak up please!

Why is this summit being held in Chicago? Seems a strange place since the last time it was held in the US was 1999 in Washington D.C.

oh wait, the mayor used to be............

I put the following comment on their facebook page [having no delusion that they will read it]:  Your "Shoot to Kill" title is irresponsible. The public has a difficult enough time understanding what General Aviation is, and with sensationalism like yours, the problem worsens. Pilots are made aware of flight restrictions and the consequences. Your story is poor journalism and is akin to yelling "fire" in a crowded theater. Shame on you!

look at it this way. If the gov't so fears the risk of terror attach that it must issue "shoot to kill" protocols for these events the PUBLIC should be afraid, not afraid of little airplanes but afraid of our governments failure in its ability to protect its citizens.

Laughable.......... there will be  a similar set of circumstances May 18-21 at my homebase of FDK (P-40 expanded under TFR-Camp David). Can't wait for them to try that BS here. A joke.....

I think one of the difficulties with this piece is that the order says "use of force" and CBS translates into the extreme "Shoot to Kill" to get viewers/readers.

I work for WEWS CH 5....does the attempted bridge attacks  in Cleveland yesterday have anything to do with the heavy-handedness in Chicago?

Here's the part I love, from the article-

"The only aircraft allowed to fly within the restricted area include regularly-scheduled commercial passenger and cargo carriers, police, and military planes supporting the Secret Service."

These are the only known types of aircraft to ever cause harm on the continental US... and they're permitted!!???

How in the world is this a negative reflection on general aviation?  What it boils down to is simply this…the United States of America is not going to allow an aircraft of any size to become a weapon of mass destruction ever again.  Get to close to a building during an event like this and then you don’t respond to ATC radio transmissions or other means of communication and guess what…you’re going to get shot down.  Shooting an aircraft down is a last resort not a first one.   Be a responsible pilot, know what you’re doing and you don’t have anything to worry about. I read it and see a sensational headline not a negative one pertaining to general aviation.

Well, for starters, airlines have hardened cockpit doors, code key entry to cockpits,  security procedures, procedures to land the aircraft under a "attack on the flight deck"  threat, guns in the cockpit etc.  It is a very different world for a terrorist since 2001.  I'm not saying a small plane couldn't be a threat, but an airliner is much less of one.
