ChristianGodin Posted April 18, 2012 Report Posted April 18, 2012 I am flying with a garmin 430 in a 201. I am starting to shop around for a 252 or Encore. I see manything for sale with a Garmin 480. Anyone can tell me the difference of a 480 with my 430. Thank you Quote

lamont337 Posted April 18, 2012 Report Posted April 18, 2012 Looks plenty capable but with a different user interface. Discontinued, but probably supported no doubt. Found this Flying Mag article: http://www.flyingmag.com/support-gns-480 Quote
BrianNC Posted April 19, 2012 Report Posted April 19, 2012 Most of what I've heard about the 480 from users is it's more intuitive than the 430 and they like it better. Quote
jetdriven Posted April 19, 2012 Report Posted April 19, 2012 I think the 480 has FMS style airway entry for the flight plan too. The Beechtallk guys think the 480 kicks the heck out of the 430W even. Quote
DaV8or Posted April 19, 2012 Report Posted April 19, 2012 I've used both. I like the 480 better. Too bad they squashed it. Quote
Jeff_S Posted April 19, 2012 Report Posted April 19, 2012 The 480 is hands-down a better primary navigator. It is much simpler to enter and store flight plans, you can use Victor airways with in/out waypoints very quickly, the multiple screen options allow you to program different views for different phases of flight...I could go on. I went from a 430w in my Warrior to a 480 in my J and after a few hours practicing with the simulator, it became very intuitive and easy to use. So much so that as I see other planes I might one day consider purchasing, a 430/530 combo to me is almost a drawback. I would at this point much rather see one of the new GTN devices because, although the UI is different, those finally have most of the primary features that were in the 480 but got left behind in the x30 series. PTK Posted April 19, 2012 Report Posted April 19, 2012 The 480 is a different animal than the 430 and absolutely a superior FMS. When coming from the x30 it requires getting used to but once there it is extremely logical and capable. Learning it from scratch is not difficult. Its the re-learning from an x30 to a 480 that is a bit tricky initially. This is due to the tedious shortcomings of the x30 frankly. I have flown all 3 the x30, 480 and of course my new GTN750. I prefer the 750 over the 480 over the 430 in that order. The one thing I wish G would change in the 750 is the requirment of two screen button touches to tell the unit that you're want to commence the missed approach sequencing. I don't think this should be necessary. It should progress to the missed approach sequencing on its own as does the 480. Quote
butchgilbert Posted April 22, 2012 Report Posted April 22, 2012 Byron, I have switched to a 406 MHz ELT. I had an ACK E-01 and bought the retrokit E-04 for a little over $500. Glad I did! Butch Quote
Awful_Charlie Posted April 22, 2012 Report Posted April 22, 2012 I've got one of each :-) The 480 is a great unit, better features and more usable, but if you are used to x30 menus, it will take a little learning as it has a very different approach to menu and option layouts. Big drawback for it in Europe is that it doesn't have an 8.3 radio, which is why I have the 430 as #2, but that might not interest you! 480 is WAAS out of the box, so is more comparable to a x30W, and it is Garmins dropping of the 480 that makes me look harder at all the competion for any avionic upgrade (just getting in quotes for an Avidyne traffic system!)
