rahawk Posted March 29, 2012 Report Posted March 29, 2012 I would like to update my cowling on my 64E model. I do not want to give up my avionics access panels, but would like a better cowling. Current original cowl has screws every 3 inches or so, and just about wore out. What is the best pre 201 cowling? Would like to fit it to an ASI cowl mod. Appreciate your feedback.... Rob Quote
M20F-1968 Posted March 29, 2012 Report Posted March 29, 2012 The best cowling update for the vintage M20's in my opinion is the 201 cowling. Can be obtained by purchasing used cowling and restoring it as needed. The install however is not trivial. Parts may be an issue now however. John Breda Quote
rbridges Posted March 29, 2012 Report Posted March 29, 2012 I agree about the 201 cowling, but it gives up the access panels. I believe someone had a cowling that was similar to the 201 w/o losing the access panels, but I don't think it's available anymore. Quote
KSMooniac Posted March 29, 2012 Report Posted March 29, 2012 http://www.swta.net/mooneymodpictures/cowlingkitpictures.html This is probably the most economical option, if the kit is still available. Give 'em a call and find out... Quote
schule Posted March 30, 2012 Report Posted March 30, 2012 Here is to hoping the economy will improve.... I called SWTA a couple months ago looking for an oil cooler relocation mod. No luck and I was told they are no longer in the mod business. SWTA had a couple of nice looking mods. LASAR seems to still have several mods and parts around. My old '67 had a delux cowl mod from LASAR done in 2003. The paperwork shows it was originally designed for a C and has a field approval for the F model installation. The mod is a 201 style with significant fiberglass work. It is nice to have the lower access panels. I looked at a Lopresti cowl. Nice looking, but it might not be the most bang for your depreciating $$$$$. I may still go with one down the road because I like the look. Good luck with your project! -Mark Quote

aerobat95 Posted March 30, 2012 Report Posted March 30, 2012 I have looked into every mod out there and currently the only thing available is the lower cowl enclosure but Lasar and ARI has a few options that mimick the 201 cowl. Depending on how you have it installed and the quality of the install the lines on the ARI cowl can look pretty nice. Still thinking about that one. As far as the 201 cowl installed on your bird....its possible but you have to get a field approval from what I understand and those are getting harder and harder to come by....good luck. Realize that the lower cowl enclosure does work and does provide a modest gain. -Ray Quote
Lood Posted March 31, 2012 Report Posted March 31, 2012 I had the lower cowl closure from Lasar installed on my Mooney and I did not gain anything to mention in the speed department, unfortunately. However, my engine does run substantially cooler and it looks way better that the original large opening. Quote
