Amelia Posted March 27, 2012 Report Posted March 27, 2012 How are y'all using your iPads? On your lap? (there's not much room with my short legs!) On the copilot's yoke? Any great ideas will be appreciated.
Ned Gravel Posted March 27, 2012 Report Posted March 27, 2012 Amelia: I bought the AvPad. I have about 20 hours behind it and it works great. See http://www.theavpad.com/
Cabanaboy Posted March 27, 2012 Report Posted March 27, 2012 i use knee mount purchased from www.kneedock.com, works great and not expensive at $29.95. It is easy to put on and take off, or tighten. I also have a ram mount with suction but hard to fit.
jeckford Posted March 27, 2012 Report Posted March 27, 2012 I have tried both the sporty's knee mount and RAM yoke mount. I have found that mounting it on the copilot yoke and angled towards me works best and is easy to see and use. I can still see the MP and RPM gauges pretty easy in my 82J.
Cruiser Posted March 27, 2012 Report Posted March 27, 2012 I have tried the yoke, co-pilot yoke, between the seats, on the knee and have not been satisfied with any of them, so I got an Aspen Evolution 2000 and now have everything in the panel and certified. I know there are panel mounts for some of the portable systems but I was reluctant to put that much money into a non-certified install that some future owner may not be happy with.
TonyPynes Posted March 27, 2012 Report Posted March 27, 2012 I ended up with it on the copilot yoke with RAM mounts. Works.
kerry Posted March 27, 2012 Report Posted March 27, 2012 I made a mount that attaches at the center of my windshield and above my compass. This puts my ipad tilted up against the ceiling or headliner(what ever you want to call it). It works well for me. I posted a picture of it on mooneyspace.
TonyPynes Posted March 27, 2012 Report Posted March 27, 2012 Kerry, when I moved my iPad anywhere near the mag compass it was effected. Do you have that issue?

f5flier Posted March 27, 2012 Report Posted March 27, 2012 New member....new Mooney M20F owner as of 3 weeks ago. I've put about 20hrs on her already with the Ipad on a RAM on my yoke(pilot) in landscape...I have the mount set towards me about an inch and it doesn't interfere with handling the yoke. Works awesome....just have to peek over the top to see the light switches.
bnicolette Posted March 28, 2012 Report Posted March 28, 2012 I think I might have finally found an iPad mount location that I can live with. I haven't flown with it here yet, but sitting in the airplane it seems like it might work out pretty well. It doesn't block visibility that much except out the lower right front windscreen. It also blocks the Tach, MP, EGT, OAT, and some circuit breakers but I have all that information on my JPI830 which is what I am used to looking at anyhow, not the original gauges. I can still see them if I have to, I just have to peek around the iPad. I also sat in the pax seat and the iPad didn't seem like it would bother me there but I am tall so my wife may have a different take on it. Time will tell. Most places I have fiddled around with for mounting I didn't like but this one seems like it may work out? I have a link to a youtube video below as well as an attached picture. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=geu2Pmzdq6Q
Hank Posted March 28, 2012 Report Posted March 28, 2012 Won't having it in direct sunlight on a long trip cause heat-related shut down?
bnicolette Posted March 28, 2012 Report Posted March 28, 2012 I'm not sure hank. I don't think I would have it running the whole time anyhow. I have not been using the iPad as I just got this one, but have been using the iPhone. I would just run the iPhone for taxi, occasionally enroute, then on approach. Most of my trips are 1 - 1.5 hour legs with hopes of maybe doing some longer ones in the future. Good point though, and I will watch out for that. I carry the stick on/suction cup shades so I wonder if that would help if I plastered one on the windscreen behind the iPad?
231flyer Posted March 28, 2012 Report Posted March 28, 2012 Brett: Please see my post below from Sept. I have done quite a few 4 hr legs with the iPad in that position and sunlight/heat has never been an issue. I also assume your built-in GPS works great (resolution of 20M or better) while in flight. I am really intrigued by the new Stratus ADS-B/GPS receiver and hope to demo one at Sun-N-Fun tomorrow. I have a iPad 1 with foreflight and find the app to be great. It has truly replaced all paper in the cockpit (backup atlas and app plates only). I have a Garmin Aera on the pilot yoke and tried all sorts of mounts and positions for the iPad. I have settled on a modified suction mount that is now affixed to the handle on the co-pilot "A" pillar. The location is great and keeps clear of all the engine intruments/breakers etc in my 231. Additionally it is part of my normal instrument scan and barely affects outside visibility. After paying $75 for a RAM yoke mount I ended up modifying a cheap ebay suction mount....$12 incl. shipping. I will attach a pic asap. « Last edit: Nov 8, 2011 1:25 AM by 231flyer»Attached Images
DaV8or Posted March 28, 2012 Report Posted March 28, 2012 I don't use the iPad for navigation, so the kneeboard works fine for me. I just wish the iPad screen wasn't so reflective and was sunlight readable. I have the aluminum iPro from Tech Boards.
Hank Posted March 28, 2012 Report Posted March 28, 2012 Has anyone tried this Flight Gear kneeboard from Sportys? http://www.sportys.com/PilotShop/product/15935 Looks like it will also work outside of the cockpit, hauling the durn thing around at work too. Oh, and look, they are out of stock until Memorial Day . . . Cockpit use would be so much easier if it wasn't do durn LARGE and HEAVY. Say 7" screen?

bnicolette Posted March 30, 2012 Report Posted March 30, 2012 Went flying today and got to try the iPad out in it's mounting location. It is as close to perfect as it's going to get without having it directly in the panel. I am really happy with it in this location. The only thing I don't like is that my glareshield is padded and covered with fabric which looks really nice (IMO). The mount I am using is a RAM glareshield mount and I know that when I remove the mount there is going to be a permanent indentation there which I don't like. 231flyer - PM sent. I see you have your iPad mounted there as well and you said you are using some sort of suction cup mount? I would love to have a picture or good description of how you did it. Video below that shows the iPad in it's new location. Video is labeled as LOP as I was playing around with that today as well. No problems getting it to run there. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7TFICSeWMy8
