Just a tidbit of information I thought I'd share about something I learned while flying my new 34 year old J model back to the Socialist Republic of the State of California...

While switching tanks, with the heater on, I noticed the fuel selector to be very hard to turn.  Once I turned the heater off and let the fuel selector lever cool for about 5 minutes it was much easier to turn.  I'm guessing the heater, which blows right over the lever, is heating the metal and causing it to expand, thereby being much harder to turn.  In my experience, if you turn the heater off 5 minutes before switching tanks it should be much easier to turn the lever.
