I have a '78 201 that needs a new engine. In discussions with someone from Air Power he mentioned that I could pay a bit of a core charge and instead of the A3B6D could get a A3B6 instead (separate mags). Has anyone done this? Are there any modifications that need to be done to the airframe? I don't want the engine to show up in a month and not have it fit!

TIA,

I've read anecdotal stories of some overhaul shops that will do the swap without an up-charge, so it might be worth calling around for quotes.  I thought it was a Lycoming charge (and several thousand dollars) but perhaps that isn't firm, and Lycoming's desire to get rid of dual-mag engines might mean there is some flexibility.

Thanks for all the responses! I was able to find Michael's earlier post and it looks like I'll just need a bracket for the prop governor. As for the core charge, Air Power did tell me there would be a $3500 charge for a dissimilar core, but the A3B6 is $2000 cheaper, so the net would be $1500 + about $200 for the bracket. Worth it in my mind, but I'm going to run out to the airport and run it by my A&P first.

Thanks for the welcome Jim R.! I do love flying my '78 J!

I hear the IO-390 STC is much more than just an engine swap.  I could be wrong.  Has anyone installed an IO-390 on thei board yet?

Dick, are you considering an IO-390?  It is 210 HP.

Take care,

The IO-390 STC requires the new Hartzell Top Prop, and the out-the-door cost will be north of $40k IIRC.  Pretty marginal benefit compared to a new/O/H IO-360 with the roller cam upgrade (what you'll get from Lycoming today) for a lot less, especially if you keep your existing prop.
