flyboy0681 Posted January 31, 2023 Report Posted January 31, 2023 My 750 unit is ten years old and I made an inquiry into a local shop for the cost of replacement: If GTN has Mod 6 or below the flat rate is $400.00 If the GTN had Mod 7 or above and needs the low-capacity battery the flat rate is $800.00 Quote

It makes no sense that it would take any more time to swap out a battery unless Garmin made major physical changes that takes more time for the shop to get to the battery. Which really brings up the question of why a part that has a expected expiration date would not be readily accessible. I've seen a few AC access panel that were buried against the wall. The staff said it took the service guys 2-3 times longer for regular service. They pretty much shut down if there was a real issue. Quote

I'm pretty sure my Avionics guy said metal tape, but he definitely said you'll see it on the side if the cover is off. No tape? Quote

And a 150 labor Spicy...$35 for a $3 1/2 AA? Are they "aviation grade" or something similarly branded? They're a common enough battery. I buy them in 10 packs for the probes on my CNC machines and we go through 4 of them on each machine about every 6 months. The pack runs about $30 delivered to my front door. Quote

It was $20 cheaper at Radio Shack. The same unit. Its actually a great strategy. Takes advantage of the feeling that "we're special" Quote
Patrick Lyons Posted July 14, 2023 Report Posted July 14, 2023 I will do my best to only touch keys that provide positive vibes. Garmin has no fear of crossing the line. This Battery replacement is just another example of behaving like a Corporate bullie in the Sand Box of Aviation !!! Thank you.....those on Mooney Space who shared Freely ... their time and knowledge Quote

Otherwise you won’t remain in business…something that Radio Shack didn’t learn. Quote
Pinecone Posted July 14, 2023 Report Posted July 14, 2023 Batteries are a tiny part of Garmin's business. Batteries were a lost leader for Radio Shack. Come in for cheap batteries, buy other stuff. IMO, Garmin would be better specifying a standard battery and let the shops get them on the open market. Quote
