Martin S. Posted December 18, 2022 Report Posted December 18, 2022 (edited) Evening gents, can somebody tell me what the Mooney firewalls are made of, steel or aluminum. Don’t have my plane nearby to check. Background: I’m trying to install one of these neat looking eyeball fittings for passing wires through the firewall. They have both Alu and steel fittings. Seems better to mount a steel one on a steel firewall for avoiding corrosion. Greets, Martin Edited December 18, 2022 by Martin S. Quote
N201MKTurbo Posted December 18, 2022 Report Posted December 18, 2022 They are .020 stainless steel. But don’t believe me, check the manual. Quote
EricJ Posted December 18, 2022 Report Posted December 18, 2022 +1 stainless steel. Most aircraft firewalls are stainless. I think the IPC shows the specific alloy. Quote
A64Pilot Posted December 19, 2022 Report Posted December 19, 2022 SS definitely aluminum won’t pass the test, some others in the past have been made from inconel,,but modern aircraft SS, most probably 304 half hard. Maule, older Cessna’s and others have used zinc plated steel. It’s cheaper. Quote
Guest Posted December 19, 2022 Report Posted December 19, 2022 Most Piper Cherokees and Comanches use galvanized steel as well. Quote

SS is just prettier and actually not as strong structurally and has other disadvantages, but it is prettier All Thrush except for the GE H-80 use galvanized steel, but I wanted SS as it’s prettier for the H-80.
