DaV8or Posted February 9, 2012 Report Posted February 9, 2012 Sounds like fun, I'll keep it in mind when we get closer. I have learned not to tell people I'm commited to a fly in this far in advance. So many things can screw up a flight plan. Quote
Dave Marten Posted February 9, 2012 Report Posted February 9, 2012 Dave, No worries/pressure. Come on out if you can. Quote
Jake Posted February 9, 2012 Author Report Posted February 9, 2012 By the way, here is the direct link to the VMG fly-in Registration page for Mojave. http://www.vintagemooneygroup.com/VMGWest/register.htm Quote
orangemtl Posted February 13, 2012 Report Posted February 13, 2012 I would VERY much like to attend! I'm in Lake Havasu, so it's a short hop. So long as I can clear the day, I'm there. Thanks for posting this. Quote
Dave Marten Posted March 8, 2012 Report Posted March 8, 2012 Here's an update on Mojave: If you're interested in joining us please sign up at http://www.vintagemooneygroup.com/VMGWest/index.htm See ya in Mojave: The presentation at the Mojave fly-in will be on the Lynx suborbital vehicle in being developed by the XCOR corporation. Spaceship II is not the only player in the commercial sub-orbital space race! These are the guys that built the X-Racer (rocket powered Velocity) for the rocket racing league and they've developed some larger engines aimed at powering their suborbital Lynx vehicle. Should be an outstanding behind-the-scenes look at emerging technology and a great oppurtunity to interact with those designing and building these vehicles. Check out the attached press release and weblink http://www.xcor.com/products/vehicles/lynx_suborbital.html Quote
Ron McBride Posted March 8, 2012 Report Posted March 8, 2012 Sounds like Fun, I am plannong on going also. Ron Quote
orangemtl Posted March 8, 2012 Report Posted March 8, 2012 A question for flight planning purposes: Mohave airport is of course right next to R-2515, Edwards AFB's Restricted space. Is 2515 typically 'hot' on weekends? Havasu to KMHV is an easy straight shot if 2515 is open, but I really do not want to pick up a personal F16 escort. I'll check with LA Center in any event, but I'd like to anticipate coming up from the south around 2515, if necessary. Thanks. Quote
OR75 Posted March 9, 2012 Report Posted March 9, 2012 I have seen both cases on weekends. I have been cleared direct from Daggett to MHJ which took me right over Edwards. Two weekends ago they wanted me to stay out of the R-airspace (follow I-5) Quote
Dave Marten Posted March 9, 2012 Report Posted March 9, 2012 Glad to hear you all are interested! Expect R2515 to be active on Saturday. Joshua Approach 124.55 (south/west/east) will provide flight following once you get within about 50NM LA (or SoCal) will hand you off to Joshua if you're already working flight following with them. They'll give you the R2515 status and if COLD may get you direct (normally above 6000). Joshua Approach provides outstanding VFR service and I'd highly encourage their use. Mojave is in the Isabella MOA, but don't worry we AF guys are talking to the same controller you are and will avoid. I'm hosting the event so e-mail me if you've got any questions and/or I'll check this post regularly. dandtmarten@hotmail.com www.vintagemooneygroup.com Quote
DaV8or Posted March 9, 2012 Report Posted March 9, 2012 Just signed up. Weather and flying God's permitting, I'll be there. Any notes on Mohave? I've never flown in there before and will be coming over the Tehachapis along the highway. Quote
OR75 Posted March 9, 2012 Report Posted March 9, 2012 nothing special about that area but watch for frequent turbulence in the TSP pass (I guess there is a reason they put so many windmills in that area). Quote

Dave Marten Posted March 9, 2012 Report Posted March 9, 2012 Quote: Skybrd Dave, you might want to check the winds aloft before crossing the Sierra's. Fox field in Lancaster would be the closest also the forcasted winds for Mojave. High winds can make the the trip not so fun. Recently the desert has had terrible winds with rotors and Sierra wave conditions. http://aviationweather.gov/products/nws/sanfrancisco and http://www.weather.gov/xml/current_obs/seek.php?state=ca&Find=Find Quote

knute Posted March 19, 2012 Report Posted March 19, 2012 Any reports on the event? I was really excited about flying down for it, but the weather didn't cooperate. The forecasts I looked at called for snow over Tehachapi, and with rain and freezing rain through the central valley, I made the prudent (but sad!) decision to stay home in the SF Bay Area. Many thanks to the organizers- sorry 66Q couldn't be there! Quote
knute Posted March 19, 2012 Report Posted March 19, 2012 Asked and answered! Here's the post-flyin writeup in case anyone else was also looking for it. http://www.vintagemooneygroup.com/VMGWest/VMG%20MHV%20Report.pdf Quote
