My plane is hangared when I’m home, but I travel all over for work.   I have installed a Reiff heater for use when I need to leave the plane outside and want to preheat but was curious what others have used when traveling.  For example,  I would fly from Wisconsin and leave the plane outside in upstate New York for a few days then fly home. I’m thinking for the days of cold blowing snow.  I see Bruce’s sells an insulated cowling cover but wasn’t sure if there was something else that has been used.   I realize some airports may offer hangar space but it’s not always an option.

The insulated covers such as Bruce’s are great, but in the privacy of my own hangar an old sleeping bag does just fine. Insulating the heated engine is the trick for a good thorough heating.
I had wing, tail, cabin and engine covers for my C310 while it sat on the ramp in DTW while I flew a trips. I had a Red Dragon heater that somehow never got used. There were a couple times I returned to find it under a hopeless coating of ice, however. Winter adventures.

Insulation is key. My 700 watt Reiff will get 70 degree rise with an old quilt draped over the cowl but only half of that number without insulation. It would be worse outside in the wind.

I've been using an XL moving blanket from Harbor Freight.  Inexpensive and works well.  Not quite as much loft as a sleeping bag, but much larger size wise and I can fold it to fit and add layers.  But I'm in a hangar and don't have to worry about wind blowing the blanket off or flapping back and forth underneath straps.  If I were outside in the elements I'd probably opt for a custom cover like Bruce's.
