0TreeLemur Posted April 21, 2022 Report Posted April 21, 2022 After our recent audio panel upgrade I flew with my wife's headset after the earpad on my headset popped off. We have David Clamps with the Headsets, Inc. ANR kit added on. Her headset doesn't sound good at all. Seems "past its prime". Thinking about an upgrade. Our headsets get ANR power from a jack near the headset/mic jacks. No worry about batteries. Can this be done with the A-20? Yeah, I hear "40 hours on a battery", but I don't want to worry about batteries. When one dies in flight there might not be a spare handy. Anyone have an A-20 they don't need anymore? I don't need BT, the audio panel provides that. Thanks -Fred
toto Posted April 21, 2022 Report Posted April 21, 2022 Any A&P should be able to install LEMO plugs that are compatible with the A20. You’ll get ship's power and audio (and I believe the LEMO A20’s still have a battery for backup).

If it dies in flight it means you ignored the 8 hours the battery low light was flashing before you changed it. Takes about 30 seconds to change batteries if you know it’s in low state and have spare AA batteries ready to go. 40 hours on 2 AA alkalines is the minimum I get. I can fly 5-8 hours a day 5 days a week and not replace batteries for 3 full weeks. Don’t use my BT much though, that may use the battery faster. Panel power is convenient, but if you want to use a different plane you need adapters or a panel power equipped plane right? My $.02. 1

My $.02. second, that. in the 20 years i've flown with anr headsets i've never ran out of battery while flying. I actually rotate my spare batteries for fear they'll get old before i use them. also, my newest headsets zulu3 and sierras are so passively quiet, the ANR is kinda a nice to have; wouldn't be a big deal if it failed in flight.
jaylw314 Posted April 21, 2022 Report Posted April 21, 2022 Does the Bose A20 work differently than the Lightspeed Zulu?? If the batteries run out on my Zulu, you just lose ANR but the headset works fine, it's just a little louder. It's not a safety issue, so I just keep extra batteries in the headset case. Even if the spare batteries get old, they're good for another 20 hours instead of 40 hours.

0TreeLemur Posted April 21, 2022 Author Report Posted April 21, 2022 I have ANR power jacks for pilot and co-pilot positions. Switching to LEMO doesn't quite thrill me given that we just paid to put in new audio panel, which included re-wiring all headphone/mic jacks. I think I'll look into another alternative like sending my wife's headset into Headsets Inc. for repair. After years of not having to think/worry about batteries, I'm not going to start doing that now.
