jackn Posted January 8, 2012 Report Posted January 8, 2012 While flying 8 1/2 hrs on Friday, My iPad's battery died. Fortunately, I have wingx loaded on my iPhone, so just switched over. Does anyone know if it is ok to plug the iPad into a 28v outlet? Quote
gjkirsch Posted January 8, 2012 Report Posted January 8, 2012 I have been using an inexpensive converter that slowly charges in flight buit it gets hot and makes me a bit nervous. http://www.dealextreme.com/p/usb-ac-car-charger-adapters-for-apple-ipad-us-plug-100-240v-43644 I bought a converter from Aircraft Spruce but have not tried it yet. http://www.aircraftspruce.com/menus/el/powerconvert_converter.html Quote
Ned Gravel Posted January 8, 2012 Report Posted January 8, 2012 Jackn: I also learned that the iPad is a power hog. The charger that comes with it is a 10 watt charger. The iPad demands around 5 volts from the charger at 2 amps. On a three-hour flight I tried to plug it into the usb connector that was being used for my AV8OR and it did not register enough to charge it so I disconnected it and charged it overnight. Mine is a 12 volt system. The charger-adaptor kit cited by gjkirsch meets that spec, but its draw in the cockpit is apparently making it hot (as he has mentioned). 10 watts off of 12 volts needs an amp. 10 watts off of 24 volts needs only half an amp. The 24 volt system should be easier on the whole setup - so I am at a loss to figure out why it is getting hot in a Bravo (unless it is a 12 volt system). Quote
thinwing Posted January 8, 2012 Report Posted January 8, 2012 in my 2000 Bravo, the cig adaptor is 12 volts and gets its power from a stepdown transformer 28 to 12 vpolts max draw 3 amps. This transformer is usally mounted on aft baggage bulkhead ,acessible from pilots side tailcone hatch.kpc Quote

231flyer Posted January 8, 2012 Report Posted January 8, 2012 Amazon has ipad car chargers with two USB outlets that work 12-30V. I think I paid $5 (free shipping with premium). Works great......will charge the iPad and the iphone at the same time. No heat issues at all. Quote
pjsny78 Posted January 8, 2012 Report Posted January 8, 2012 I have a 28v ship. after some research, I use my ipad with a charger I got from bestbuy. its only one of a few that will work. I have used it for several hundred hours in my plane and not 1 problem. you are going to need a cord however. i purchased an extra standard length apple cord and roll it up on the yoke when not in use. http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Belkin+-+2.1+Amp+Micro+Charger+for+Apple%26%23174%3B+iPad%26%23153%3B%2C+iPhone%26%23174%3B+and+iPod%26%23174%3B/1232905.p?id=1218239487283&skuId=1232905&st=ipad car charger&cp=1&lp=1 Quote
