Having once worked for a data protection company, I like to back up data. The G3X will download a config file to the SD card so that a saved configuration can be restored. But there is a separate download that isn't so obvious: the fuel calibration file. I asked Garmin support if the config file includes the fuel calibration data and was told that it does BUT it will only restore to the same System ID that it was recorded from. Other system parameters in the config file are not System ID dependent according to Garmin. So, it appears that should a GDU ever go belly up and require replacement, it will have a new System ID and the only way to restore the fuel calibration file is if it were separately downloaded. At least that's how Garmin explained it. Redoing the calibration is a lot of work involving draining the tanks, levelling the airplane, and adding incremental known quantities of fuel while programming the G3X.

Has anyone gone through a GDU replacement and verified that my understanding is correct?

I haven't gone through this and I don't know the G3X configuration but I thought the system ID was in the configuration module, not in the GDU itself (though I'm not certain the G3X uses a configuration module).

Thanks. I believe you are correct. I've asked Garmin to confirm that all the configuration and calibration data is stored in the configuration module. If so that would simplify things.

skip, did you ever verify that all the data (including fuel calibration) is contained in the config file on the sd card?  I want to make sure mine is “backed up”.  It does appear that my gdu failed and was replaced about 2 years ago and there’s no mention of redoing the fuel calibration (and the logbook entries are pretty detailed), so I think it must have been saved.
