A few pics during the trip on Thursday, while finally moving the airplane temporarily to Texas from Indiana.  Averaged 35 knots in my face the whole trip, which kept my altitude way down to 6k.  Far worse winds above that.  Brian and I started working discrepancies to begin getting it into the kind of shape that made my previous Ovation so special.  Over the last 48 hours, we already dismounted and disassembled all wheels, did new tires, new tubes, new brake linings, rebuilt the right brake caliper, and replaced all 15 cracked static wicks with new.  Some of the remaining things on our docket over the next couple of weeks…

  • Complete the annual inspection items
  • Replace all 11 shock discs with new
  • New CIES fuel senders
  • Connect the NAV portion of the OR500 light head in the tail
  • Do a lot of cleaning inside the wings and empennage
  • Replace the factory incandescent Whelen 90033 anti-collision beacon with its Whelen LED direct replacement
  • Change out the baggage light with its Whelen LED replacement
  • Replace the defective heated stall warning vane with a new exchange unit from Safe-Flight
  • Install 4 new Parmetheus G3 landing lights in the wing pods
  • Other items as we find necessary

Over the next 1 to 2 months

  • New IO550N-8B engine, mounts, hoses, baffles, iridium plugs
  • Prop overhaul
  • Exhaust OH/rebuild as needed by Acorn
  • Full strip and reseal on both fuel tanks

3 to 6 months out, based on what I know about current availability/scheduling

  • Paint consult, scheduling & accomplishing paint job
  • Upgrade/add cockpit equipment and revise layout

How do you like the g3x compared to the txi?

It’s ok, but It’ll come out at the first opportunity.  Probably offer it here first…along with some other hardware.

Comparable to the f33 or v35, the mooney is slightly faster. On the same fuel it'll just go slightly further. With long range tanks the mooney has 130 gallons. The bo is 114. Mooney has the speed, range and CG. Bo has the off airport capability, the Useful load, and when it comes down to fun flying, the bo has the controls. One isn't better than the other. Ones just better at certain aspects than the other. At the end of the day, the bo is what more people are looking for. However, only the mooney can beFIKI turbo with the long range tanks. The only bo thats 35% more plane than the long bodies are 36 models. And thats because they're literally a different class aircraft.

100% spot on , yet people keep comparing the two , as equals , They are not...

Holy cats that’s alot of nice upgrades. Wish i could afford to do that. Got to get the kids out of the house first. I’ll live vicariously through your posts.

I would try to find an acceptable core with logs to give back to Continental on your new engine purchase and then sell this one with <1300 hours to someone with a runout engine. Then I’d take the extra money and put it toward the Platinum engine upgrade. The Acclaim I have came with the Platinum engine and it’s the smoothest piston engine I’ve ever flown behind. (The Platinum already comes with Iridium plugs and balanced injectors along with balanced parts, etc.)

Can you share a part number for this?

Bummer about the stall warning.  Those things are spendy.

Welcome Back!  If you "Get"  Mooney, upgrades are few and very, very costly.

The maintenance manual shows GE 1818 as stock interior bulbs, which have a BA9S base.  This bulb is a different base?  Just want to make sure I order correct LED replacements. Are the overhead lights the same bulb?

M20R MM list of interior bulbs. But it doesn’t show baggage light. I’ve changed it before and the baggage bulb is much larger than the overhead interior bulbs. I can’t find the bulb number at the moment though.

The baggage light in mine is the same size base as an 1156 reverse light in a car, but a much smaller top to the bulb. My interior lights over each seat are the BA9S base. But things change over the years so go by what's in your maintenance manual and if you want led then cross reference them at the superbightled website.

Yours in the link you provide is too long for the small overhead fixture it goes in.

image.png.de3fa0d615b837bbed1b4be5cdbf05a6.png

It's an inch longer than this one below, which barely fits: https://www.superbrightleds.com/moreinfo/miniature-and-subminiature-bulbs/1156-led-light-bulb-with-stock-cover-36-smd-led-tower-ba15s-base/1686/3947/  On the package that this one comes in, it is rated from 10-30 VDC and it looks a lot like the incandescent bulb it replaces for any over-reaching IAs. (On the picture of the bulb below it says 10-30 VDC)

Most importantly it works beautifully.

The specs on yours show it at 2.5" long (2.52" x 1.1" x 1.1" ) and the other LED that I use at 1.5" long (1.5" x 1.08" x 1.08") and I much prefer the one where the leds are covered in the clear acrylic enclosure.

The picture you show is of an incandescent which is an automotive taillight of the same base size but a much bigger bulb on it, definitely not the 28v light that Mooney used in the airplane.

This one fits, is the right voltage and even looks like the incandescent bulb it replaces. No need to search further.

Good suggestion.  Honestly, I hadn't thought about this until you mentioned it.  I'll look into it

Yeah, it will fortunately not cost anywhere close to the $7,800 that a new one goes for, but Safe Flight will pull a new one off the shelf and do a new exchange for $1,842.  Still not cheap by any means, but a ton better than new.

The specific part number with suffix for the baggage light I ordered is 70813-16

You might be able to kill two birds with one stone. An Ovation owner at or over 2000TT might be your customer for the 1300TT engine and then take that core on trade.

Brian must have an Ovation customer at TBO  :D
