nels Posted February 3, 2021 Report Posted February 3, 2021 My cousin bought a 67 Mooney E model a little while back and it’s time to change oil. He couldn’t find the oil filter so I stopped by and we took all the cowling off and there just isn’t an oil filter to be found. Was it an option or is it hidden somewhere?
Hank Posted February 4, 2021 Report Posted February 4, 2021 Many left the factory without one. My 1970 C had the filter added by STC at some point, between the engine and firewall. There's also an oil filter relocation STC, but I don't know where it moved to--hopefully somewhere more accessible.
RLCarter Posted February 4, 2021 Report Posted February 4, 2021 It wasn’t a Mooney thing it was a Lycoming thing, and Continental too
carusoam Posted February 4, 2021 Report Posted February 4, 2021 Key words... oil screen, and safety wire... -a-
lamont337 Posted February 4, 2021 Report Posted February 4, 2021 Adding a filter adapter was one of the first things I did when I bought my plane. Believe you need 12 and 14 and if I remember correctly we reused #10. Not an A&P, verify as necessary. https://www.skygeek.com/donaldson-204418-156-adapter-filter-spin-on-oem-p-n-77852.html
chriscalandro Posted February 4, 2021 Report Posted February 4, 2021 Did you happen to try looking in the maintenance manual? all answers are clear when following the manufacturer instructions.
Guest Posted February 4, 2021 Report Posted February 4, 2021 Except the manual has one picture and two sentences covering oil changing. Not very helpful. Clarence
nels Posted February 5, 2021 Author Report Posted February 5, 2021 This plane has a fresh overhaul and looks as if it was very thorough. I’m just surprised it never has an oil filter. I imagine my cousin will be looking for the adapters to put one in..
carusoam Posted February 5, 2021 Report Posted February 5, 2021 No oil filter seemed to be common prior to Y2K... Oil gets changed so frequently, some people didn’t think much about it... Cutting filters open, and performing oil analysis, while looking for cam parts, and discussing diamond like coatings have become aviation’s national past time... Air filters haven’t changed much either... What looked like a step up, really wasn’t... PP thoughts only, not a mechanic... Best regards, -a-
