MikeOH Posted August 20, 2020 Report Posted August 20, 2020 Also, be aware that a BSV will burn a tad more than 9 gph Quote

The pre buy uncovered stuff my shop missed that did the rebuild , more surprises. If it where experimental I’d gladly tackle it myself most of it and the parts wouldn’t have a 1000% markup. I'm not exactly sure why you think experimental ownership is going to be so much cheaper. If your F had issues that you hadn't noticed during your ownership and that you hadn't addressed, why do you think you'd find issues with a used airplane someone else built. Lots a variation in the quality of work and equipment in the RV world. Also if you're not the builder, I don't think you can perform the condition inspection, so you need an inspector anyway. If you have a relationship with an A&P that trusts your work, you can do as much of the work as you and he see fit. And, if you're self employed and trying to build a business, how much time do you have to spend in the hangar anyway? 1 Quote
SantosDumont Posted August 25, 2020 Report Posted August 25, 2020 My Mooney was a great first plane, but I'm never owning a certified plane ever again. Way too much drama. At least with experimental most of the drama is self-inflicted. Currently building a RV-14 in the garage. Quote

Did you maintain it yourself, if so how was that? It’s been some years so I don’t remember the hours. I didn’t do the maintenance but it was cheap to own and operate. It was enjoyable and I did quite a few cross country flights in it for minimal cost. Quote
steingar Posted August 27, 2020 Report Posted August 27, 2020 If you really want to do Mooney speeds for Mooney money in the EX/AB world you'll be buying something with one seat. I take it back, you can probably get a Vari Eze for the price of a short body Mooney (with some leftover). The experimental you buy will be old and won't be very capable for pax or luggage. As far as maintenance, we have a member here who just about rebuilt an aircraft under the eyes of an A&P. If you really want to do your own maintenance it can happen. You are stuck with airplane parts though. Older Mooneys are just incredible values for what they deliver. 5 Quote

First it was a 6, then a 7, and then a 14. I was thinking of starting one in 2009 but then my job sent me to Australia. A friend of mine started his RV7 that same summer. I came back in 2014 and he was still building. So I bought a Mooney. He's still building and I've logged over 1000 hours in my Mooneys. I'd have to be retired with a lot of time on my hands... and I'm still not sure I'd build one now. 1 Quote

They often take longer to build and finish than most people think, then they’re really never finished. Buying a finished one is often as big a gamble as buying a vintage certified airplane Clarence Quote

Even if you get a bang up PPI? the price of the eagle I currently fly was bought for 134k. The first annual was 16.8AMU. Quote
gsxrpilot Posted August 28, 2020 Report Posted August 28, 2020 I would gladly swap a set of keys to my 252 for a set of keys to a nice RV8. The usual conditions around proper currency, training, and listed as a named pilot on the insurance would apply both directions. Quote

Best regards, -a- Sure, I've been recording the build on video. Follow along. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCVZ6dv27KUJsicTmoMuLhlg I haven't done anything in 6 months though. Really bad timing on my part. I had planned to pull some money out of my market funds in March to buy my next piece of the kit and then COVID happened.... which is frustrating because I have been sitting at home with nothing but time on my hands! My plan was to keep the Mooney until I completed the RV, but I haven't flown anywhere in 6 months... doesn't look likely that I'll go anywhere in at least the next 6 months... been thinking about selling the Mooney and putting the money I was spending on it towards finishing the RV. 1 Quote
