Jim Peace Posted September 16, 2019 Report Posted September 16, 2019 my Garmin pilot subscription ran out: I have the GTN and the FlightStream 510 and the GTX345. They told me that I can just buy the Garmin Nav database subscription on the internet and it will connect to the flight stream 510 using ForeFlight somehow and I do not need to buy the Garmin Pilot app anymore like I used to with the connex button for my nav database updates. Also they told me that they now geo reference some NOS taxi charts for the larger airports and safe taxi is not needed........for airports such as DAB. Is this all true or did I get some new hire on the phone who does not know a thing about Garmin and flying airplanes? Quote
HXG Posted September 16, 2019 Report Posted September 16, 2019 That has not been the case in the past. If you find that to be true though Garmin or Foreflight, let us know. Quote

I would still need the GP app to use the flight stream 510 for the nav database updates.... As far as them geo referencing the NOS charts....who knows.....I bet they have not... Quote

Foreflight is correct. And with them being acquired by Boeing and being a sister company for Jepp, I doubt it will change. Quote
Jim Peace Posted September 16, 2019 Author Report Posted September 16, 2019 It totally sucks that I feel like I have to have a subscription to both GP and FF.... If the GP app was intuitive (in all areas) and had geo-referencing on the NOS airport taxi pages I would not have to.... Quote
ilovecornfields Posted September 16, 2019 Report Posted September 16, 2019 I thought you could use the free (expired) GP app for database downloads. Is that not correct? With the 33% SAFE discount I don’t think foreflight is a bad deal. I use Jeppesen plates so don’t have to use Garmin pilot at all. Quote

Jesse Saint Posted September 18, 2019 Report Posted September 18, 2019 I asked Garmin at Oshkosh last year about this. The guy said there is a free version of the app that you can use for the Database Concierge. Not true. I’m so glad to have an Avidyne box now. I update with a thumb drive (yes, ANY thumb drive) every 28 days. Quote
