They turn a blind eye to that because they don't want the STC surrendered back to the FAA with the liability. M20 Turbo STC ownership has a checkered past after Bill passed away and is essentially in no man's land. Anyone can request the FAA to verify if it has been abandoned. It takes about a year for them to do the process. Once it is deemed abandoned, it goes back to the FAA into the black hole never to be seen again. The FAA will only support ongoing airworthiness issues with the STC like ADs. The FAA doesn't want the STCs abandoned because if a situation requiring an AD comes up airplanes are stranded. The STC holder has the responsibility for the engineering. Don't think the FAA assumes liability for abandoned STCs. At that point perhaps a field approval might be attempted. Quote

Wrong choice of word "liability" should be "responsibility." Quote
KSMooniac Posted November 21, 2019 Report Posted November 21, 2019 And in the case of the M20 Turbos STC, it truly is a black hole as the widow lost or disposed of the engineering data associated with that STC, except for hard copies of the drawings. Even worse, the FAA lost their copies of the data as well.Sent from my LG-US996 using Tapatalk Quote
KSMooniac Posted November 21, 2019 Report Posted November 21, 2019 I agree with Anthony's sentiment regarding the Coy bundle of STCs...I have no idea if there is a widow or other entity that might have control, but approaching her/them with the intent of a donation to the Mooney Summit sounds like a great idea. Lumping them into a non profit with any sales proceeds going back into the Mooney community is a great idea, and perhaps even Coy might have liked that idea. If there is any engineering support required, I'd be happy to help too.Sent from my LG-US996 using Tapatalk 1 Quote
carusoam Posted November 22, 2019 Report Posted November 22, 2019 MS has a few friends / contemporaries(?) of Coy’s... This could be helpful if somebody is interested in discussing STC possibilities with Coy’s next of kin...? Best regards, -a- Quote
