PTK Posted July 15, 2011 Report Posted July 15, 2011 Looking to have the cowl painted soon and was wondering if anyone has an opinion in removing the RAM Air inlet and close that hole in the cowl. Mooney has a RAM Air removal procedure. Does anybody see any cons in doing so? Any input always appreciated. Quote
jetdriven Posted July 15, 2011 Report Posted July 15, 2011 Ours has that. Its a 1977 J model. The M20-93 procedure basically removes the ram air and blocks off the inlet in the air box. Our cowl still has the inlet under the spinner and has a plate behind it. The Mooney instructions say to fiberglass over the hole. I dont see any cons, the ram air only gives <1" of MP and is one more thing to maintain. Quote

flight2000 Posted July 15, 2011 Report Posted July 15, 2011 The older Mooney's get up to 1 inch or more of boost at the higher altitudes. Our birds air intakes aren't as efficient as the design on the J and so they don't get the same intake boost as an older E or F. I regularly get >1" MP increase at 7-9K with the RAM door open. I would close it up if I owned a J for the reasons you guys are already discussing. They may have left it on the J as a hold over thinking it would do the same thing, but it didn't add that much for you guys as you already know. Brian Quote
PTK Posted July 15, 2011 Author Report Posted July 15, 2011 How would a buyer view the J if RAM air was closed. Think it would it make a difference ? Quote
jetdriven Posted July 15, 2011 Report Posted July 15, 2011 Mine was closed when I bought it and I view it as a plus. One thing less to maintain and the work is already paid for. Quote
carusoam Posted July 15, 2011 Report Posted July 15, 2011 An educated buyer, is your best customer... On the F, it makes a big difference, on the more evolved J, not so much. On the even more evolved R it is gone and so are the cowl flaps. The intake system is the evolution that I am refering to. The F intake was good, the J was less restrictive, the R went one step further to include beautiful curved / balanced intake pipes.... Best regards, -a- Quote
jetdriven Posted July 15, 2011 Report Posted July 15, 2011 ON later J's the ram air was deleted from the factory. I'd say the J's tuned intake is as good as any other. Ours has stock injectors and runs 100 LOP. Quote
