smccray Posted July 11, 2011 Report Posted July 11, 2011 Hi all- Parker gave me a brief introduction to the Mooney brand via his new bird yesterday and I have to say I'm impressed. I don't have to tell anyone on this board the many inaccuracies about the planes that I've heard and I have to say that I was a little surprised- the cabin was tight, but not unreasonably so. The back seats were small, but I would fit back there for a 300 mile trip without any real problem, particularly if I was sitting in the back alone. I looked at a DA40XL partnership deal and frankly I think I had more headroom in the Mooney than in the DA40, although the clear canopy in DA40 made it feel bigger. The M20J would be a decent fit for my mission and I have to admit I'm starting to eye the '84 and newer birds. It would be a big step up from the 172s I've been flying for the past 18 months, but I think it's reasonable with some intensive transition training including a multi-day VFR cross country trip. So the faceless new guy has to go there...anyone in the neighborhood with an M20J want to let me buy you lunch and some avgas? Before buying a plane, I'm hoping I can bribe someone into a short flight with me and my wife in the back seat so she can get an introduction to the brand, and a feel for what it would be like if we were to bring another pilot with us on a trip. I'm looking forward to learning from you all and contributing where I can. Scott Quote
smccray Posted July 11, 2011 Author Report Posted July 11, 2011 ??? why doesn't that show as separate short paragraphs? It's a little difficult to read... Quote
Parker_Woodruff Posted July 11, 2011 Report Posted July 11, 2011 Hey Scott, Good finally meeting you in person. Sorry it was such a bumpy ride yesterday...But with 100 dF heat and 60+ mile visibility, that was expected. Quote
201er Posted July 11, 2011 Report Posted July 11, 2011 Why couldn't you live any closer lol Welcome. I don't know where the whole "Mooney cabin is too small" myth comes from because realistically it's about the same as the others. Though I'll admit from outside it looks tiny. I guess it just comes from the guys who've seen from outside and never actually been in one. Good luck. Quote

KSMooniac Posted July 11, 2011 Report Posted July 11, 2011 Scott, I'll be heading to McKinney/KTKI on Friday for the weekend and could possibly help y'all out... of course the weather will likely be miserable but if you're used to that in a 172 then it shouldn't matter in a Mooney. Quote

smccray Posted July 17, 2011 Author Report Posted July 17, 2011 Thank you Scott for showing us your plane! We had a great time. My wife is on board with the plane. She has long legs, but she was happy that she could sit in the plane comfortably without her knees touching the front seats. So... now to get serious about a new plane. Quote
wolftimj Posted July 18, 2011 Report Posted July 18, 2011 Me and my '82 201 are based in Rockwall (Dallas suburb, F46). If you want a ride, your welcome anytime. Of course this thing may sell soon, so the offer stands as long as I have it, then it might be a ride in a Bravo. Either way. Tim Wolf tim.w@apps4ems.com Quote

Jeff_S Posted July 19, 2011 Report Posted July 19, 2011 That position Scott describes is also very useful when it comes time to use the relief bottle or Travel John! Quote
