aviatoreb Posted December 2, 2018 Report Posted December 2, 2018 Hmmm...this looks interesting. Imagine running firelight's new iPhone-capable SVT and projecting with this thing? https://prime8.com/vizr/?s1=p8fndsf $39.99 wait. By 2 - get 1 free! Wait!!! Buy 3 get 2 free! I love how at the end of the ad it says "While HUD technology usually costs $400, $500, even $800 or more" These look more expensive for the F16 - even more than $800. Maybe even 500 or a 1000 times more. https://americansecuritytoday.com/bae-systems-modernize-head-displays-uae-f-16-fleet-video/ And I bet its not even offering a buy 3 get 2 free offer. 1 Quote

I can get one for the 3 planes I own. Wait a sec, I don’t own 3 planes. It’s amazing that at one time we were considered the great inventors. Now we are the king of knock offs. Piloto Posted December 2, 2018 Report Posted December 2, 2018 (edited) I attached with Velcro strips my Samsung 7 to the sun visor on my car and M20J for a HUD effect. Besides the HUD benefit I get quicker WX updates via internet. Using the Garmin Pilot app. Veery useful on the road. Try it, is only $5 on Velcro strips. ArtVandelay Posted December 2, 2018 Report Posted December 2, 2018 . Besides the HUD benefit I get quicker WX updates via internet. I wouldn’t count on it, even in Florida at low altitude you barely have a signal, unlikely to get timely updates of WX. Quote

Hector Posted December 4, 2018 Report Posted December 4, 2018 I flown all over the state in Florida and above 6000 I get no useful cell phone reception even over the big cities. I guess if you are low and over populated areas like up and down the east coast it might work, but much of the state is unpopulated and I seldom get a phone signal Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk Quote
Raptor05121 Posted December 4, 2018 Report Posted December 4, 2018 Same- I lose it anywhere above 3k feet. There are sporadic "pops" of 4G, even as high as 10k, but its only useful for queueing a text and it'll send itself when it has that brief signal Quote
Atalla Posted December 4, 2018 Report Posted December 4, 2018 Forgive my rookie-ness, but has anyone tried using a cell booster with (most importantly) a directional antenna such as a Yagi angled toward the ground? I just recently moved to a rural area and I am getting amazing results with a similar booster setup for my house. Between the low power requirements, light weight, and clear LOS of being in an aircraft I cannot see why it would not solve cellphone issues even at high altitudes. Quote

Planning on adding one on my M20J with the antenna on the belly. So my wife can keep gossiping with her sister. https://www.wilsonamplifiers.com/weboost-drive-4g-x-cell-phone-signal-booster-kit-470510/ José Quote
aviatoreb Posted December 4, 2018 Author Report Posted December 4, 2018 Huh - another thread becomes that thread about how Jose receives cell service in the air in Florida. I think that's great. And you have velcro. I for one don't receive cell service in the air around here, or almost anywhere I fly on the northern eastern seaboard. In fact many places near here, Adirondack mountains I don't even receive cell service on the ground either. Meanwhile, I have ADSB weather and XM weather. Meanwhile, that not withstanding, I ordered one of those little mirror HUD-toys to play with since I am wondering if it will be nice with Synthetic vision projecting from garmin pilot (or firelight) on my cell. It may be just a gimmick but I kind of want to try. I like the idea of SVT on the glare shield. We shall see. Quote
vorlon1 Posted December 4, 2018 Report Posted December 4, 2018 Sorry if I missed it, but I don't recall anyone talking about this: Dual HUD Interesting for me since I already use a Dual XGPS170... 1 Quote
