75_M20F Posted August 10, 2017 Report Posted August 10, 2017 Cruising along in my F and had a close encounter w a Carivan. They ended up going right under me. Got a verbal traffic alert from the GDL88 / GTN 750. I was in no peril, I just thought what an amazing advancement ADSB had been for light aircraft. 3 Quote
jonhop Posted August 11, 2017 Report Posted August 11, 2017 Just installed a GTX-345 and the only traffic alarms I have received thus far has been in the pattern... I can say that the traffic displayed on Garmin Pilot has been phenomenal. Although I've had to look extremely hard, I've found most traffic that was displayed on the screen with the exception of one aircraft thanks to my eagle eyed wife. She is good at pointing out aircraft and found one that was within 2 miles that didn't show up on the scope when we were at 10.5K about 20 miles south of the Los Angeles Bravo. I don't know the cause of this phenomenon but I suspect the FAA is still hiding traffic intentionally in the name of steering more pilots to adopt ADS-B. But, as you said... this technology is a game changer in aviation safety. Quote
Bryan Posted August 11, 2017 Report Posted August 11, 2017 (edited) When filing IFR, I have seen or gotten the traffic alert sometime minutes before ATC lets me know - love the awareness. +1 for the GTX 345 and GTN 750 combo. Edited August 11, 2017 by Bryan Quote
Bob_Belville Posted August 11, 2017 Report Posted August 11, 2017 I've had the GTN750/GDL88 combo for almost 5 years. That pop up alert screen do get your attention! 1 Quote
ArtVandelay Posted August 11, 2017 Report Posted August 11, 2017 It won't see traffic outside the area if a ground station or with no transponder but it's scary how much traffic I've been missing. Quote
Marauder Posted August 11, 2017 Report Posted August 11, 2017 It will get even better as more planes are equipped. The traffic pattern will always be a potential area of concern. If you aren't picking up ADS-B signal taking off, unless you have TAS or they are ADS-B equipped, you won't see them (same for the non-transponder equipped planes). Bennett Posted August 11, 2017 Report Posted August 11, 2017 With my current setup TIS - B traffic is presented on my GTN 750 moving map with alerts, on the GTN 650 (I normally keep the traffic page displayed at the 6 mile range), and the Mini 4 running ForeFlight in moving map mode in its yoke mount. This setup picks up an amazing number of aircraft. I think I have good eyesight, and a good scan habit, but TIS-B shows quite a few aircraft that I miss with eyeballs. Of course once you have altitude, distance, direction of flight information, it is easier to find aircraft in the proximity. I also use the data block to determine the type of aircraft. There have been several instances when I have deviated in direction or altitude to avoid traffic that was not following the hemispheric rules, or aircraft whose course was erratic. All in all, I feel safer with ADSB. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Quote
