MooneyMitch Posted March 3, 2017 Author Report Posted March 3, 2017 Not wishing to name any MSers by name (Don Muncy ), but that non-mentioned name offered up a very good suggestion....... so, our Mooney Fly In, SMX is located in Santa Maria, CA, 93454 (we are located on the Central Coast of California, approximately 40 miles Northwest of Santa Barbara, CA). Much appreciated and thank you for the suggestion Quote

Arrive anytime you wish. I'd informally listed arrivals beginning at 11. Yes, lunch at Pepper's noon and ArtCraft tour 1:30. I'm looking forward to all! Have a fun flight! Quote
MooneyMitch Posted March 3, 2017 Author Report Posted March 3, 2017 Well, now NOAA is forecasting dense fog, gradually clearing after 10 AM With that, our times are very flexible then. Do not feel pressed to get here before noon, please! This is all very casual, so those of us who have arrived will simply do airplane talk and Mooney gawking for awhile, should the fog linger a bit longer than predicted. ArtCraft is available later in the afternoon too. Very flexible they are. Again, if you wish, 805 305-1546, Mitch, cell. Have a fun and safe flight. Quote
Skates97 Posted March 3, 2017 Report Posted March 3, 2017 Where is transient parking there? I see on the AFD to "remain clear of commercial ramp and terminal" but don't see transient parking on the airport diagram. I'm assuming the restaurant is in the terminal building? Just wondering where to park for easiest access to the restaurant and ArtCraft. Looking forward to my first fly-in. Quote
MooneyMitch Posted March 3, 2017 Author Report Posted March 3, 2017 Tell ground 121.90 you're going to ArtCraft. Easy peasy it is! ArtCraft is just North of tower and the building is quite visible. Very large white WWII hangar building with verbiage " Santa Maria Public Airport" on front overhead of building. We'll park on ArtCraft ramp. I'm not going to say "you can't miss it", but odds are very, very high you can't miss it See ya! Quote

MooneyMitch Posted March 4, 2017 Author Report Posted March 4, 2017 My opinion only, and based on living here most of my life, 1500' is good VFR into SMX. With that said, it's your complete call with absolutely your safety and comfort above all. Also, if it is 1500 and that's below your safety parameters, and coming from LA area, you can possibly stop at IZA (Santa Inez, Ca, near Solvang, CA) for a bit. Coming from the North, stop at PRB ( Paso Robles, CA) or SBP ( San Luis Obispo, CA). Check out SMX ATIS too via phone and again, I'm 805 305-1546. Call anytime. Please have fun flying your Mooney here! If it's not going to be fun for you, simply stay on the ground. There will be more opportunities just ahead. Mitch Quote
jonhop Posted March 4, 2017 Report Posted March 4, 2017 I really want to come but according to the below... I'll play it by ear and check again around 0800.... 1 Quote

Mitch Yes, but right now it's showing Camarillo at 1,000' and Santa Barbara at 1,500' so I wouldn't be able to make it over the 4,000' range between Santa Barbara and Santa Inez. Unless possibly routing over the mountains north of Burbank (KBUR and KVNY showing broken at 20,000') along the 5 towards Bakersfield and then coming in from the north-east. I'm going to check the weather again in the morning. Quote
MooneyMitch Posted March 4, 2017 Author Report Posted March 4, 2017 You please be safe and make safest call of "go" or "no go". Again, there will more opportunities for some flying to a place ahead. I understand it's not fun to stress about the weather for a flight. Best to you. Quote

No worries, if it doesn't look good we'll still fly someplace fun tomorrow. I've got a couple backup destinations to take the family for a fun Saturday flight. Quote
thinwing Posted March 4, 2017 Report Posted March 4, 2017 Good morning all...so who all is going...SMx is 1000 and mvfr...the rest of socal looks fine....don't want to be only one there Quote
mikefox Posted March 4, 2017 Report Posted March 4, 2017 We are IFR capable and looking for some actual, so may come up regardless of weather. I'll check back before leaving the house - also don't want to be the only one there -Mike Quote
Skates97 Posted March 4, 2017 Report Posted March 4, 2017 I know @MHemperly filed IFR last night and is planning on going. I'm going to have to sit this one out. But the weather everywhere else here is nice. We are going to go to Lake Havasu (KHII) and have lunch at Hangar 24 out there. On the way back planning to detour a little to the south and over Anza Borrego State Park. It should be beautiful with lots of green and the flowers are starting to bloom. You guys/gals have a great time, we'll catch you at the next one. Quote
M20S Driver Posted March 4, 2017 Report Posted March 4, 2017 Flying to KSMX is doable but returning to KPAO in rain and heavy IFR traffic is not fun. See you next time Quote
wishboneash Posted March 4, 2017 Report Posted March 4, 2017 I could go and make it back as well from Livermore, but would prefer a better day so could meet more people.Sent from my ONEPLUS A3000 using Tapatalk Quote

MooneyMitch Posted March 4, 2017 Author Report Posted March 4, 2017 Hi you all. Again, this is about having a fun and great reason to fly our Mooneys someplace. We are here at ArtCraft and the restaurant is open if you wish to come out. If not, and you have the opportunity to have a fun flight elsewhere, do it. Ok, see you or not. Regardless, enjoy the day please. Mitch Quote
MooneyMitch Posted March 4, 2017 Author Report Posted March 4, 2017 I don't want to influence you at all,.BUT we are seeing cracks of BLUE SKY now . Quote
