205 Tailgroup

On my 77 J I have changed the airvent to a more up to date 81 J style. My airframe mechanic has indicated to me that after he temporarily installed the tail and checked for movement on the trim, the positions shown in the pictures below of the new fibreglass fusalage fairing doesn't line up with the position of the aluminum stablizer fairing. All the pictures I have seen of other similiar Mooneys are inconclusive as I can't blow up the picture to see what other J's look like with this newer style fuselage fairing.

It may be as simple as triming the new fusalage fairing to match with the aluminum Stabilizer fairing. If any one has pictures available from the newer style tail group that may help me. I'm kind of a fussy nut and a stickler on detail, and how it currently is placed bugs me a bit. So before I go and have all the rivets removed to line things up again, I thought I would ask this group.

In my gallery there are about 40 pictures of various Mooneys from KOSH this year.  They were originally posted with relatively high def.  Some of the photos indicate the general area you are questioning.  Let me know if any of these photos can help you.  I can email a few photos in their original HD format if it helps.  Unfortunately most are 20ft photos...

I had this done on my 78 M20J though I added the new metal side tail fairings also as you can see in my album. In my case the side fairings where a bit to long and had to be trimmed. I would X check with lasar. IMHO trimming or leaving it as is seems to be the only option if you re-use the old side fairings...

As with everything Mooney, They are all hand made. Your mechanic needs to understand that. If he is installing new parts to an old plane then he needs to have a little artistic talent, especially with aircraft skins, cowlings, etc. None of them will ever fit, especially if they are pre drilled. I always recommend asking for these types of parts to be sent blank (not drilled to fit) so that the fit can be done to the aircraft. Looks to me like you are doing some serious work on that tail. Eldon, I would order a set of the newer fairings from LASAR...they are longer and will come black so they can be fit/trimmed/drilled to suit your plane.  I replaced my smaller ones (like yours) when I painted the plane and put the later model fiberglass dorsal fin and "knuckle" fairing on as well.  They weren't too expensive, relatively speaking, either.
