TWinter Posted May 9, 2016 Report Posted May 9, 2016 Has anybody recently had a the Aspen Pro installed? I've gotten a quote along with the other upgrades I was looking at doing from my regular shop. The shop says normal pricing is $10,500 to $11,000. He did say since I was already looking at installing the STec 30 autopilot with GPSS that I would save a few bucks on the Aspen install because I would not need a separate DG for the STec. He told me the Aspen would be about $9000 installed. For anybody that has had it one installed recently does that sound about right? I would think there would be more savings since they will already be in there with much of the avionics already dissected while putting the STec AP in. I've looked on the internet and see Sarasota and a few shops that publish their prices are all in the 11K range on a cold fresh install, but is from fresh install. Mine will already be opened up..Maybe I'm being a overly "Cheap Bast@@@" thinking it should be cheaper since they are already in there. -Tom Quote
markejackson02 Posted May 9, 2016 Report Posted May 9, 2016 That sounds about right although it assumes no snags in the installation. I had mine a few years ago and it cost about $1500 in labor for the whole install. Quote
ArtVandelay Posted May 9, 2016 Report Posted May 9, 2016 $9000, installed? Who is your avionics shop? I can't believe removing, reinstalling interior takes more than 8 hours, so that would add $500? P.S. I've never removed interior so correct me I'm wrong Quote

I had the STEC30 put in at the same time for 15,999 including install. They work great together with the Aspen providing the GPSS interface - you will love it. The shop I used has a reputation for being about 20% cheaper than the regional competition for the install- they run a lean operation at a small, out of the way field, but their work was very good overall. I think the PFD price may have gone up slightly since last August. But even accounting for these factors, 9000 seems high to me- and I can't imagine the overhead is worse in Tennessee versus the northeast. For that kind of savings, it might even be worth bringing it up here... Edit: Do your prices above refer to just the install cost? 9000 would be less than the cost of the unit... 1 Quote

I guess I didn't phrase it very well..sorry. Yes $9000 is the installed price. The STec30 w/ GPSS is $13000 installed. Quote

KSMooniac Posted May 9, 2016 Report Posted May 9, 2016 Sounds like a great deal to me... I believe 9k is about the dealer cost for these, and most end up at 11-12k installed into a Mooney so it sounds like you're getting the installation for free. Quote

Aspen currently has a promo running. I also believe when Aspen sales slow, they allow bigger discounts through their distributors. The scenario you described is exactly how I ended up with an Aspen. Do I spend $2,000+ for a standalone CDI or do I make the dive into a full solution. When I was having the Pro installed, I was asking about redundancy and I got one of those "if you buy now" prices that is in the ballpark you are describing. In other words, if the shop does good size of business with Aspen, I think you will see more competitive pricing. Quote
TWinter Posted May 9, 2016 Author Report Posted May 9, 2016 Just got back from the avionics shop.. Aspen is doing some kind of promo this month because he said if we are doing it, we needed to do it this month. Went with STec 30 A/P with GPSS STec Electric Trim Kit JPI EDM 930 Garmin Remote Audio Panel Aspen Pro+ My avionics guy was extra nice and in a pretty good mood today..wonder why? Going to be long 4 week wait for the equipment to arrive. STec is currently 4 weeks order time.. 4 Quote

I hit the lottery when I did my Aspens as well. 1 Quote

I'm sure he made it up on the other end somewhere. The whole upgrade is just north of $30k. I guess I should have my initials embroidered on the headrests because at this point I'll be keeping her for a longggg while. 4 Quote
KSMooniac Posted May 9, 2016 Report Posted May 9, 2016 That sounds like a really great price to me for all of that great equipment! You'll love it. 1 Quote

Bob_Belville Posted May 9, 2016 Report Posted May 9, 2016 Tom, you'll love it all. I added the Aspen PRO to the STEC50 I already had. GPSS is wonderful. I added the JPI 930 at the same time - also very nice. Are you already ADS-B I/O to be 2020 ready? 1 Quote

Rustler Posted May 9, 2016 Report Posted May 9, 2016 Tom-- Why are you getting the STEC 30 with a GPSS? The Aspen 1000 Pro PFD has a GPSS built into the system. Quote
