Mcoyne34 Posted March 6, 2016 Report Posted March 6, 2016 What all is needed for this? GPS? Does it have to be WAAS? Etc.... Ballpark costs? Quote
Mcoyne34 Posted March 6, 2016 Author Report Posted March 6, 2016 Sorry if this has already been discussed elsewhere. Quote
Mooneymite Posted March 6, 2016 Report Posted March 6, 2016 (edited) Yep....been discussed and cussed many times. If you fly where Mode C is required today, generally you will need ADS-B in 2020.....unless.... Cliff notes: ADS-B needs a WAAS GPS source (some temporary exceptions). This source can be internal-built into the transponder, or external (as in a GNS 430). ADS-B can be an "all-in-one" box for ADS-B in and out, or partial solutions which provide only the mandatory "out" portion. ADS-B can be anywhere from about $2000 for a bare bones solution, to about $60,000 for a commercial jetliner solution. Take your pick. Generally, about $5000 will give you what you need, but speculation is that the price will fall. There are many threads on this subject here on Mooneyspace and other aviation web-sites. carusoam Posted March 6, 2016 Report Posted March 6, 2016 New hardware keeps getting introduced from all players. Expect SNF to have some interesting announcements as well. Best regards, -a- 1 Quote
1524J Posted March 6, 2016 Report Posted March 6, 2016 Asked this exact question at the avionics shop when I had my IFR certification done a couple of days ago. He told me the least expensive at the moment was the system that has the GPS built in (I don't have WAAS). Would be around $4000 installed. He also made the point to tell me not to wait until the last minute. Guess he figures they'll be busy around that time. 1 Quote
glafaille Posted March 7, 2016 Report Posted March 7, 2016 Mooneymite- Great job of condensing ADS-B into as few words as possible. 2 Quote

Their approval is a simple STC that can be done and signed off by your local IA if he's game. This opens the possibility of owner assistance and significant cost savings, particularly if you are willing to remove and install your own interior (a task that nearly all mechanics hate). 3 Quote
DrBill Posted March 7, 2016 Report Posted March 7, 2016 I have a GNS430W (waas) so I added the GDL-88 for 5k installed. I love it. A friend added a self contained unit to his piper(no gps) for $3000 installed. (NAVWORKS). He is very happy. Quote
