Somehow I posted this on Modern Mooney talk by mistake. :)

I have read the sun visor threads, and was wondering if anyone has found a solution.  I have the original ones in my plane and they don't stay up for even a half second.  The previous owner tried using Velcro to keep them up and that has failed and left circle marks on the windshield.

I have tried to get visors, but obviously have failed.  Not too much of a mechanical guy, but looking for a solution.

My plane came with the Rosen visors and they are awesome. I hear the pricetag is pretty steep, but after having them I think I could almost justify the money.

That is correct.  I can't get a Rosen for my airplane.  I have tried.  Just seeing if anyone else has a solution.  I dealt with it for three years, but would like a better flight west in the evening.

There is a thread where someone rigged a clamp for the center post and attached smoke colored acrylic on hinges.  I never got around to trying it.

I can post pictures of mine tomorrow. They're not painted or prettied up in anyway. But they work awesome for the front windshield. They don't rotate to the side windows. The lenses were $25 for the pair from Lasar and about $10 in misc hardware pieces from HomeDepot.

Well that stinks about the Rosens not fitting, but I know if mine hadn't come with them I'd be doing what Paul did. As I remember it came out really good, and certainly cheap.

Just curious, why doesn't it fit?  I was just on the verge of buying one, Aviation Consumer recommends it, but of course they didn't specifically test it in a Mooney.

I would love to see those pictures. My visors are absolute garbage. I too can not use Rosens. Anybody know about the legality of using clamp on visors that aren't STC'd, or have PMA? Wouldn't they sort of fall into the same legal category as RAM mounts on the yoke?

My guess would be the length of that arm. I have a bunch of ram mount stuff, and just going off of the scale of the pic that arm would put the shade somewhere towards the middle of the windscreen.

Like I said, they're pretty rough. I really should clean up the bolts/nuts and put some black paint on them. The problem is once I got them installed, they just work so well, I can't bring myself to take them back out to make them pretty.

They work independently and can easily be seen through. The lenses were $25 for the pair from Lasar, the hardware was about $10 from HomeDepot.

I'll try to get better pictures if anyone wants to see them. This was at altitude today with my iPhone.

Those are awesome.  Could you give me specifics on the clamp and visors.  Hard to tell what the clamp looks like

It was all pretty simple. All parts other than the lenses came from HomeDepot. I got 2 U-bolts that fit around the bar in the center of the windshield. The U-bolts come with nuts and flat plates. I actually got 4 of the U-bolts and ended up using all 4 plates but only two of the U-bolts.  I also got a 24" section of 1/4" rod and 4 U-bolts that fit the 1/4" rod. Finally I picked up a section of 2" flat aluminum. I cut and shaped the flat aluminum to match the curve of the lenses. I used a piece of aluminum plate on either side of the lens. Then drill holes for the U-bolts through both plates and the lens. The aluminum plates allow you to tighten the U-bolts around the 1/4" rod without cracking the lenses.

On the center windshield bar, I used slid a piece of rubber hose over the 1/4" rod to protect the bar and to provide resistance to rotation of the rod. That allows the lenses to stay where you put them.

Finally a slight bend in the 1/4" rod gets everything lined up.

OK, I see it now.  a total of 6 U-Bolts used (4 for the lenses and two to hold the 1/4' rod to the center column.  Very nice.  What would you do differently?
