rbridges Posted January 12, 2016 Report Posted January 12, 2016 the leading edge came loose a few months ago. I figured no big deal, but it seems to be getting worse. I guess the wind is getting under it and pulling. I sent my IA a text, but I was wondering in the meantime if it's hard to fix. It looks like the fastener separated. Not really sure how it engages.
carusoam Posted January 12, 2016 Report Posted January 12, 2016 That piece has a name. And Ross (screen name =) has posted some nice pics recently of how to mount it properly and some other details... It probably isn't related to the wing walk compound since you have one on the other side to? the original screws that hold that molding in place are tiny and corrode after a fifty years. Ya know what I mean...? Best regards, -a- 1
rbridges Posted January 13, 2016 Author Report Posted January 13, 2016 thanks, took me a while, but I found it. Looks like it just rivets back in place. 1
carusoam Posted January 13, 2016 Report Posted January 13, 2016 Glad you found it. It would have taken me another day to remember enough details to perform a search. Best regards, -a-
Yetti Posted January 13, 2016 Report Posted January 13, 2016 At least the leading edge and trailing edge are held on with #4 screws. They are backed up on the inside with a speed nut. You could probably remove the interior side panel to get to those. I think the leading and trailing edge may need the bottom panels removed. Stainless seems appropriate to keep it from reoccurring. I think stainless will add .000004 knots per screw replaced
Hank Posted January 13, 2016 Report Posted January 13, 2016 Mine are held on with little bitty Phillips screws. 1
rbridges Posted January 13, 2016 Author Report Posted January 13, 2016 Mine are held on with little bitty Phillips screws. I think you're right. I reread the other thread. I guess the head of the screw pulled through the strip.
Hank Posted January 13, 2016 Report Posted January 13, 2016 I think you're right. I reread the other thread. I guess the head of the screw pulled through the strip. Are you sure they didn't vibrate loose and fall out? Let me know if I should remove and measure one, their about 4-5" apart all the way along.
carusoam Posted January 13, 2016 Report Posted January 13, 2016 Similar to the way the sheet metal cover that goes over the tail hinge is held in place. Tiny screws... They probably got installed on the same day in the final assembly area of the plant. Best regards, -a-
Shadrach Posted January 13, 2016 Report Posted January 13, 2016 (edited) Yetti has it right. That fairing is held in place with #4 screws with tinnerman nuts on the backside. If the nut is no longer there, you will need to remove the corresponding interior piece to fasten it properly. Edited January 13, 2016 by Shadrach 1
rbridges Posted January 13, 2016 Author Report Posted January 13, 2016 thanks guys. this was a huge help!
Shadrach Posted January 13, 2016 Report Posted January 13, 2016 thanks guys. this was a huge help! Rob, In looking at your pic, it appears as though the screw has a fair amount of paint on the head and is still in place; this means the tinnerman nut's gone missing or the screw is broken (likely). You may be able to fasten it from the back side, if not, you're going to need to "cut" the screw out.
Yetti Posted January 13, 2016 Report Posted January 13, 2016 "Broken" a nice way to say corrosion has eaten away the screw. metal screws with aluminum skin with paint stripper. galvanic corrosion .... You should probably have more than one #4 screw and several speed nuts ready. Depending you may have to go up to a #6
Yetti Posted January 13, 2016 Report Posted January 13, 2016 The aviation fastener department of homer dan has stainless screws and the slide boxes have the speed nuts

Hopefully it's intact so I can remove it easier.
