Greetings friends,

The engine in question is in my '67C model. It came from an '80 201. I posted the long version of this plea in the "old" Mooney forum.

Basically I'm trying to find out if there are any other IO-360 models that will "plug and play" in place of the A3B6D.

Thank you.

For the J's you had the option of going to the real dual-mag model instead of the shared mag...or your could upgrade to the IO-390 if you wanted to spend extra for a new prop and the STC.  As for C models, there I'm not so sure.

fairly simple question to answer:

the engines you can install on your plane are:

-  listed in the TCDS (just google FAA Mooney TCDS ) . I believe it list 2 engines for the C model

- or, if the engine you currently have installed is not listed in the TCDS , then it must have been installed based on an STC and the STC document (which should be in your POH or with the maintenance logs) will describe what your options are.

I am surprised to hear you say the A3B6D is not available

As OR75 pointed out, your only options are listed on the TC for the C-model (O-360) and what is listed under your STC or field-approval that blessed the installation of the IO-A3B6D.  I doubt the IO-390 is available for the C since it was aimed specifically at the J models, and besides I think I read that engine is getting axed anyway.

If it were me, I'd keep the IO-360-A3B6D as it is a great engine, still has parts support, and should make your C into a great hot-rod.

It should be an easy field approval to change to an -A3B6 engine, since both it and the -A3B6D are in the 201 parts catalog, which is where the engine was sourced from.  I'd call and talk to the guys at LASAR, they are very helpful.

We ordered a D engine from the factory and they offered us the A3B6 for only 3500$ more.  We declined then they gave us the A3B6 for the same price anyways, they couldn't get overhauled dual mags.

Lycoming accepts the D as a core even if you order a non-D

the non-D is actually a couple of $1000 cheaper than the D

but when you change to a non-D , there are a few changes you need to make ( hoses, brackets for the governor , etc ...) , so overall it is a wash .
