Heybluez Posted December 16, 2015 Report Posted December 16, 2015 Flew to RDU today but during preflight, noticed these bubbles under the paint on the pilots side, right behind the cowling. I've never seen this before. I will take it to my mechanic when I am back Thursday ( headed to PDK tomorrow ) but curious if you all have any ideas? I don't think there is anything that could have linked under there. thanks! MJP
N231BN Posted December 16, 2015 Report Posted December 16, 2015 Is this right under the pilot's vent window? How long have you owned the aircraft?
moxfox Posted December 16, 2015 Report Posted December 16, 2015 Just curious ,what's that line above the rivet line there? those rivets all look like they been moving because the paint chips around the heads! I'd be more concerned about that at this point .
kmyfm20s Posted December 16, 2015 Report Posted December 16, 2015 Looks like some chemical got on the paint and streaked backwards.
cliffy Posted December 16, 2015 Report Posted December 16, 2015 The rivets are doing the same thing. How long ago was it painted? Could be lack of prep before paint of corrosion under paint.
jlunseth Posted December 17, 2015 Report Posted December 17, 2015 Actually, it looks like some decal tape was used to create the stripes, and the tape is tearing over the rivet heads. That is what is going on with the rivets, does not necessarily mean they are moving. I suppose it is possible that the tape was partly painted over, and the "bubble" is actually tape underneath the paint that is loosing adhesion and moving around. Just a guess from a photo.
carusoam Posted December 17, 2015 Report Posted December 17, 2015 Taking JL's idea a step further... It looks like the red layer was laid down first and the white is not adhering to it. The scratch above the painted lines goes down to the red again... Check the logs, see who did the paint? See if they can help bring it back to life. It is not going to be a low cost alternative. Best regards, -a-
Guest Posted December 18, 2015 Report Posted December 18, 2015 My internet guess is that residual paint stripper is in the skin seam between the two rows of rivets. The upper row is unaffected at this time, the lower row is chpping because of the stripper. The blotch in the white line appears to be some form of filiform corrosion under the paint, then further down there are several more damaged rivets on a diagonal line. Clarence
Yetti Posted December 19, 2015 Report Posted December 19, 2015 Not alot to go on with one photo. What Clarence said. The white could be left over stripper too. Whatever it is it is eating away your alum skin and needs to be delt with quickly.
