Nice planes gentlemen!  Thanks for the pictures.  Why is it we never tire of looking at pictures of airplanes?

Nice planes are out  there, somewhere.  Not always easy to find, like the proverbial "Needle in a haystack"!

Continue to be patient, and be ready to pounce when you find a good one.  The good ones still sell fast in this market.  But you also need to avoid getting "in heat" when you find one as Maxwell likes to say. ;)

I'll point out an advantage to the injected engines over the carbs that might balance out the perceived higher operational cost.  The ability to fly LOP with an injected engine means greater fuel efficiency as well as a cleaner and cooler engine.  Less "gunk" to foul plugs and valves.  Saving 1 or 2 GPH over 1000 hours of operation adds up to significant money.  Overhauling the entire FI system is ~$1500, so a little more than a carb.  Cylinders are more expensive if buying new, but if they're first-run or maybe even second-run there is little reason not to overhaul them.  After all, you have a known good cylinder that provided many hours without fail so there likely isn't a hidden flaw lurking in the metal.

Someone mentioned earlier you might call the major MSC shops and put the word out.  Often there are owners that are thinking about selling but dreading the process.  if there is an interested buyer actively looking, sometimes they'll make a deal.

My last bit of advise... tis better to overpay for a high quality example that has been loved and maintained vs. getting a deal on a cheap one.  Pulling it out of the hangar to fly whenever you want vs. having to correct years of deferred maintenance is a much nicer ownership experience.

I'm doing this more for Dave than you (he loves me posting pictures of my current panel)

And Marauder loves this simple old layout. It's spartan but I get by.

Choosing between Bob's panel and Marauders' panel is like choosing between blondes and brunettes!

I like both!  But don't tell my wife!

Yikes, Marauder has pics of blonds, brunettes, and redheads. Probably baldies and bearded.

But his is certainly the fancier panel... I don't have a backup Aspen. (And my old panel is already over 3 years old and all I've added is the neat little AOA. Meanwhile B26's mistress has had several bangles bestowed on her.)

Yes Bob, indeed our panels are Spartan. It is truly amazing we don't get lost everytime we venture into the blue skies that surround us.

Flying with such minimal equipment has me extremely anxious. Especially if need to rely on my third attitude indicator.

Heaven forbid you ever had to pull up the #4 IA on the I(whateveritis) mounted on the yoke.

Hello gents.  I've been scouring the market for a nice M20C or E for several months now and have looked at a few, flown a couple and looked at more logbooks than I care to for a very long time.

Here is my wish list:

No corrosion - Probably good!
Low to mid- time engine and prop - Check!:)
Last Overhaul by reputable shop - Check!:)
Good Autopilot - Stec or similar, altitude hold preferred - Nope:(
Bladder tanks or total reseal within last 10 years - Check!:)
Basic but recent avionics - Quality antiques for sure
Instruments arranged in "6 pack" order - Check!:)
Excellent maintenance history - Service Center or FBO - Check!:)
Serviceable paint and interior - Check!:)
Speed Mods - Looking for 150 Knot cruise- Probably not. :(
Engine monitor with fuel flow and carb temp a plus - Nope :(
1965 or newer - Someone told me engine access is easier with later models. Check!:)
Less than $55,000 - Check!:)

So here is a likely candidate that appears to meet many of my most important requirements:

Anyone here familiar with this aircraft?  Any idea what I can expect for a cruise speed, 140 knots?  I appreciate your opinions.  Thank you!

Hi glafaille,

I stopped at Air Mods and had a look at this plane and J Model that are for sale on the Website. This plane is very clean, the paint and body looks almost new, not like it was a 40 year old airplane. I met Dave Mathieson, but he had other business to attend to, so Shane ( think he is a mechanic) showed me this aircraft. It was very cold and really windy so I didn't get to go up for a ride.

This plane looks great in person, well maintained. The avionics are old and need to be upgraded, but would most likely work for a while. I am not sure what it would take to get the pc wing leveler working. All maintenance has been done at Air Mods (MSC) and it has history. I asked about the gear ups, I was told that the latest (2010), happened after a bird strike, seems the pilot got distracted and just forgot to lower the gear. Not sure about the one in 1986.

If I was going to pursue this aircraft, I would get another MSC to look at it. Henry Weber in Lancaster PA is not far that from Robbinsville. I would consider it myself, but really think I want a newer 201 or 231. I hope it helps.

Thanks for the intel on this plane.  It is on my short list, especially since the price was reduced recently.  I wish it was closer, might be a week or so till I can get up there.

Only 2 things I can find to gripe about are the avionics and the 3 blade prop.  I would prefer a Top Prop.  On the other hand it does look very clean from the pictures and now with your confirmation it is a very stron prospect.

Thanks again.

Nothing wrong with a 3-bladed C, mine runs great. I've been told to expect being 3-5 knots slow, but I also have the 201 windshield. I've always made book speed, then last year did lots of work on the doghouse and carb heat box, and picked up 10 mph or more. Now I indicate ~143 mph at 9-10K, which is 170-172 mph true. Not bad when book speed at 10K/2500 is 164.

Still looking!  Seen a few, but they were not as I expected.  Made an offer on one at the sellers asking price, then was told the plane was "as is where is", he was OK with a pre-buy but unwilling to pay for the repair of anything if found.  Passed on that one!

Was going to airline up to Airmods Fllight Center for a look a couple of weeks ago but got sidetracked at work, now I can't get away for a trip.

Been about 4 months now, starting to look at Piper Arrows.  I'm not getting any younger.

No not an Arrow!!!!  ;)   Being in Texas, I'm surprised you can't find a suitable short body Mooney in your own  back yard.  Still, I'm in Philly and Airmods is in my backyard- let me know if there's anything I can do to help. Dave Mathieson, owner at Airmods, is a good guy.

Find me a sweet deal on a Missile and I'll show you a sweet deal on a nice E model :)  Turn key!!

OK, I guess I'm going about this all wrong.  I'm going to focus on finding a plane for a fellow mooneyspace member who wants to upgrade and buy his old ride. :D:D

I'm now looking for a Mooney Missle!

Seriously, Twinter if you hear of something in my area, I'll be happy to check it out and take LOTS of pictures of the plane and logbooks for you.  I'm a professional pilot and have been around planes for a very long time and have received instruction from Don Maxwell on things to look for on Mooneys.  I'm no expert but I'm very thorough.  Maybe that is why I don't yet have a plane.

Thanks for the offer to visit Airmods.  I think Dave might have one that will work but it's tough right now to get away.

Anyone have any contacts in the Buffalo NY area?  I am talking with a guy there about his plane.  Sounds good but hard to travel right now for me and expensive to get to Buffalo on the airlines.  I need some "hands on" intel.

I'm not sure about the details but LASAR is working on an E that is being refurbished for sale and I think it's nearly finished. You can give them a call 707 263 0412 and ask or if you like I can stop by and get more information.

I love my E, but a Missile always seems to get my attention. I've seen a few, but most that are  in my CB budget are ragged out and need soooo much work, much like what you have experienced in your search. Don't give up the hunt yet. Let me know if you come across a nice Missile while your looking for your dream bird. I'm always interested in considering a change of pace..as long as the tail is on backwards.
