Is it the same hinge on the nose gear door by chance?

There is a recent thread that covers the NG hinge.

try this, it may be better....

It could be.... I wish the Mooney parts catalog gave a generic part number but alas no.

But looking at Spruce, the stuff is sized in 1/16" "fully open" widths. Its tricky to do that kind of measurement with the hinge attached to something and not laid out flat. Also I don't know if there are any gotchas with orientation.

My hope is to get all the parts in hand before getting into the job to reduce the amount of time the door is completely off the plane.

Its it its not standard hinge.  The standard hinge is thinner than the mooney baggage door hinge.   You have to buy each half separately for around 60$ and the pin is extra too.

Looks like it is all one assembly, 3336-5.

I'd be wary of putting on anything other than the factory authorized part.

There was a recent thread where a baggage door tore off in flight. Not worth the risk for a sawed off piece of piano hinge from Lowes.

Imagine if that door hit the elevator or vertical stab? On second thought, let's not think about it.

Ok interesting...

It was a very reputable MSC - and my IA - who both told me it was likely a standard hinge. I just ordered the door seal from them and had the conversation.

The reason the hinge needs replacing... it was prior to my ownership, but it looks like it flew open in fligh. I've been flying around with a few broken segments on it for 8 years. Its just time to fix it all... I guess some more research is in order??

jetdriven:  that is interesting information. In my parts catalog it looks like there was a change in the model years. For my plane I see "hinge assembly" but in later years that changed to "hinge, half". A doubler is also listed, but its not clear whether that applies for all model years or not. I am guessing any doubler already installed would be re-used, perhaps even used as a drilling template, for the mechanic at my FBO who does the sheet metal work.

Yours may be different than mine. Mine is two pieces with a roller that drops into groves. I don't think that is generic. Earlier Mooneys I think used a simple two piece hinged device that may be generic.Mine is warn out such that you need to be careful that it doesn't knock you in the head.

Robert they are giving details of the hinge itself, I think.

Not the hinged device that holds the door up?  I could be mistaking...

Now, if David in Wisconsin could build a few hinged devices to keep doors up...?

My baggage door hold-open hinge was kaput.  I got nailed by it while loading and got a new replacement for $7 bucks from Mooney.  Cheapest part ever put on my plane...and it STILL is working great 15 years later.

A follow-up, finished most of the project today. Again this was for the hinge the baggage door pivots on... not the thing that holds the door open!

I measured the hinge in-place and took an educated guess and ordered a replacement from Spruce... I guessed correctly. What was on the airplane was MS20257-4.

At $5 for a 3 foot length, its the cheapest airplane part you'll buy. Now my mechanic who did the sheet metal work suggested the hinge was replaced at some point in the past, so who knows if this was the original equipment part? But, we replaced what was there with the same, and he did a great job, the door fits better than it did before, and it will look great after some touch-up paint, and after I get the interior back together... the new door seal went in OK as well, after giving myself blisters last night from scrubbing all the old sealant off for an hour.

So what was the Spruce # you ordered?  Come on man give me the correct Spruce part #.  The hinge search did NOT give a good number for MS20257-4.  I appreciate your detective work.  Thanks for the number in advance.

FYI while not a huge job it took some labor for the hinge... 1.5 hrs shop labor, and I had removed the door from the airplane, the interior, and will replace the interior and do the touch up paint myself.

Yup, understand this is not a slap it on deal.  My A&P is good at this type of work and he is reasonable on price.  I like to work in something like this when not much is going on the annual beyond standard inspect and lube...Maybe I can get him to install the co-pilot knee vent I have wanted for a decade...
