joepilot Posted May 28, 2015 Report Posted May 28, 2015 1994 201J SN# 33xx. Does anyone know with some degree of certainty where the voltage regulator is located?? So far I've got: By right co-pilot foot (it's not), high by right co-pilot knee, outside firewall (it's not), high inside firewall, in center console (from Mooney)... I can't find it in the Parts Catalogue and don't have a Service Manual on hand. Thanks!! -Joe
KSMooniac Posted May 28, 2015 Report Posted May 28, 2015 Mine ('77) was mounted on a plate that was clamped to a tube behind the panel on the co-pilot side, close to the side wall. IIRC, on the '81 I dis-assembled, it was on the pilot side mounted to the skin. Zeftronics is a great option to replace it if that is the route you're going. Jim and I have 12V systems and I'm not sure if they make 24V, but worth asking.
carusoam Posted May 28, 2015 Report Posted May 28, 2015 Possibly something like this? http://zeftronics.info/documents/PIT/R25400-PIT.pdf Just looking... Best regards, -a-
Wistarmo Posted May 28, 2015 Report Posted May 28, 2015 I do not believe Zeftronics has a 28V regulator approved for an M20J. I believe they have many regulators for Mooneys, but not 28V for the J model. Things may have changed since I last researched.
Tommy Posted May 28, 2015 Report Posted May 28, 2015 Mine (1981 M20J) is located just under the co-pilot side close to the middle section. It's a big golden box. with a canon plug. You won't miss it! Yes, Zeftronics is great. Good for trouble shooting!
Flynnupe94 Posted June 6, 2015 Report Posted June 6, 2015 JoePilot I hope that you've had better luck locating a voltage Regulator for your J.I had a lot of problems locating one for my Ovation. I finally had to purchase a new one for 1600.00. When it was all said and done I felt like I was robbed.
joepilot Posted June 6, 2015 Author Report Posted June 6, 2015 Wow, $1600 sounds like a lot. I've turned it over to the shop on the field. They'll "try" to get to it in a couple weeks. A zoo over there. I've received a "no thanks" from 4 other mechanics. Must be nice to be able to turn down business! Dealing with these guys is as frustrating as troubleshooting my issue! The VR may be located on a tray attached & behind the CB panel. From Mx Manual:
Guest Posted June 6, 2015 Report Posted June 6, 2015 I've got the voltage regulator for you plane in stock and would love to see it gone. Clarence
joepilot Posted June 6, 2015 Author Report Posted June 6, 2015 Thanks Jim! Mooney keeps telling me it's in the center console. lol
joepilot Posted June 10, 2015 Author Report Posted June 10, 2015 Posting info for anyone doing a topic search in the future: Turns out, my voltage regulator IS located sort of behind the center console. For a "newer" Mooney, there isn't a PMA replacement available, namely from Zephtronics nor Plane Power. Seems the only non-STC unit is from Mooney (which may be partly made by Zephtronics). I'm in a '94 201J. As mentioned in a prior post, the Mooney VR is $1600+. Luckily is seems my shop has one on hand for less.
AndyFromCB Posted June 11, 2015 Report Posted June 11, 2015 One, are you sure your voltage regulator is broken? What's the symptoms? Two, if it is, send it to Maxwell. He made mine brand new for $250…It is made by Zephtronics which happens to be across the field from him ;-) Third option, of course, much cheaper than others, is to simply drill open the box (rivets), trace the wires and replace the board with Plane Power board. Not exactly STC/PMA, but who is to know otherwise...
joepilot Posted June 11, 2015 Author Report Posted June 11, 2015 Thanks! They are "fairly certain" it's the VR. Getting 0.7 volts (24V system) to the Field, so alt won't come on line. 24 volts at the Field CB though. New Plane Power alt. Trying the new VR tomorrow. But, it's electrical. Simple system, but...
AndyFromCB Posted June 11, 2015 Report Posted June 11, 2015 I ordered some canon plugs and wired them to mooney pin layout. This allows to me trouble shoot quickly and I will never be stuck somewhere as I have spare PP VR in my side pocket ready to go into action if ever needed...
Tommy Posted June 11, 2015 Report Posted June 11, 2015 It could be the wiring not the VR! That's why Zeftronics is great because it has got a troubleshooting LED light. I have gone thru this before and it turns out to be a bad wire from the Master to Alt Field CB. In hindsight the original VR didn't need to be replaced but I probably wouldn't know where the problem is until I replace with Zeftronics. Besides, it's working brilliantly, keeping my bus volt pegged at 14.2v at all time!
