Wow, this PIREP has a life of its own. Like Bob, we ran my calibration with flaps down, and the upper limit at Vy. That way Vx is at the top of the yellow/orange, and acts as a caution to avoid a departure stall. As soon as I bring up the gear and flaps, and lower the nose to Vy, I get the green light. I like getting some altitude quickly after takeoff, and the AOA shows the safety margin. Once I get to about 1200' AGL, I will lower the nose still further and start my cruise climb. The AOA unit takes out the guess work about the initial climb, and adjusts for the takeoff weight for that particular situation. It's just a good tool - one among many.

I programmed mine similarly. I also want to make sure it remains calibrated that way once set.

Not so fast there Mike!

Aspen didn't "allow" anything.

Their connected panel (CG100 gateway) requires the data stream first go through an Aspen MFD box! No choice.

Garmin Connext, on the other hand, is a direct link solution between the pilot app and Garmin panel navigators.

It allows choice and gives you a multitude of options.

I'd say Aspen is the one who "propriotized" the data stream! Which I'm perfectly fine with.

But if you're going to talk about "proprietizing" you have to be fair!

Yes, Aspen Allows you to connect their stuff to others, and first to offer the technology, like I said. Garmin, well, not so much. Garmin is the reason new Garmin products wont connect to other avionics vendors via Aspen's connected panel, not Aspen "not allowing" it.

Owning the gateway without an Aspen MDF makes as much sense as owning flightstream without a Garmin GPS, but at least the Aspen will talk to a GNS box unless it has the "important" update that prioritizes the data stream, Peter. Who knows, if Garmin didn't do this, possibly the Aspen gateway would work with your G500 or G600 or G1000, whatever you have.

I think we are getting close to an intervention with Peter Garmin. We are going to need to trick him into believing we have a room full of Swiss watches and invite them to see them. When he shows up, we lock him in the room and start rolling the Timex in.

I have contributed to this threads' drifting from the CYA AOA topic, to which I apologize. From everything I have heard, it is a great, simple product. Thanks for the PIREP Bennett!. Bob, if you are at SNF, I think I still owe you a barleypop.

Mike, here are the facts.

Garmin is not the reason why Aspen connected panel requires you to have an Aspen MFD. Aspen data "proprietizing" is the sole reason. And that's perfectly ok.

Garmin, on the other hand, doesn't force you to have a Garmin MFD to be able to utilize Connext!

What's missing is an Aspen GPS to complete the picture and offer real competition!

But don't blame Garmin if there is none!

I think you squared us up @ Panama City Beach!
